We’re only 13 days into 2023, but this might be the year when we finally realize that oversized, lightning-fast electric SUVs/trucks are a disaster – both for road safety and for the planet.

A 🧵
Enormous EVs pose several serious problems:

- The added weight of their battery makes them deadly in a collision
- Their needlessly fast acceleration puts other road users at risk
- They consume a LOT of scarce battery material and require vast amounts of power to charge
I'd like to think my article last week in @TheAtlantic helped draw attention to the these problems.

But I’m not the first to make these points. @ACEEEdc, @bcshaffer, and @CostaSamaras46 have been raising flags about EV bloat for a while.

I'm at @USDOT's #TRBAM session re: roadway safety.

I'll give USDOT credit: They start by showing per capita roadway death rates for other countries, and then poll the TRB crowd, asking what they think the US fatality rate is (the audience's estimate was too low).

Good message
Deputy Secretary @Pollytrott: "It's really incredible that the US road fatality rate is 5x the United Kingdom...There are a lot of ways you can explain that." And then she moved on.

I'd like to hear her talk about those explanations!
.@NHTSAgov head Ann Carlson:

"We are updating NCAP [federal crash safety ratings] and hope to have a new round completed in the next six months."

She says it will include pedestrian protection.

Context on NCAP in the article below

Proud of the great work we’ve done at @DDOT to lead the nation in rethinking the dvlpmnt review & TIA processes for a 21st century city. #VisionZero #LessParking #Equity@Westy33

This is our 2021 #TRBAM paper showing other cities can do the same: linkedin.com/posts/aaron-zi…
Quality site design, public realm design, #VisionZero, connectivity to transit & n’borhood amenities, and minimal parking supply are the most important aspects of a project to DDOT. The traffic analysis (i.e. intsctn congestion) has been demoted to #9 (most cities it’s still #1). Image
There are so many good reasons to provide minimal off-street parking and appropriately price the amnt of parking you do have (especially near transit)... check out the graphic on the right, isn’t the bldg on the bottom so much better? Image

.@UCSUSA hosting a workshop on battery recycling and reuse at #TRBAM. While the oil industry and trolls like to point to battery issues as a knock against EVs, we’re working towards solutions.
.@ENERGY working to develop low/no cobalt batteries, recycling R&D, logistics of collecting used batteries
.@argonne leading collaboration with 2 other national labs, 3 universities to develop cost effective process for recycling Li-ion batteries. They are pursuing a “direct recycling” approach... e.g., recover cathode material without affecting chemical composition.

Pilot in BC Canada: @velometro 3-wheeled enclosed #ebikes operating as shared vehicles. Think Car2Go+bike. Geofenced to keep off pedestrian walkways. #TRBAM
If @velometro classified as bikes they can be in bike lanes but you couldn't park these at a bike rack. Lots of policy issues to be worked through. #TRBAM #bikeshare (?)
Traffic operations questions created by low-power vehicles that aren't quite bikes. If they operate (maybe in general motor vehicle lanes) + you want smaller vehicles used for urban delivery + working for bike mode shift, what happens? #TRBAM #LEVs
