why does trump keep doing awful shit to everyone? a thread:

trump was broke when he ran. he owes at least $410M, we don't know to whom he owes it but pretty good chance it's a russian state-funded bank that transferred $ to deutsche bank at the same time he got the loans

1/
we also know that russia helped him win the election. what he owes for that, or whether that whole scheme was an effort for him to pay back an even greater undisclosed debt, we may never know. but what is certain is trump owes russia at least $410M plus election services

2/
we also know that since trump has taken office he has directly sought to destabilize as quickly and permanently as possible every aspect of american life using the guise of republican policy (i.e. plutocracy mixed w/racism). some acute examples include:

Ein kranker Präsident an der Staatsspitze, der evtl. sogar stirbt? Was die USA heute erschüttert, traf die Weimarer Republik gleich mehrmals. Ein Thread. (1/12)

Am 28.2.1925 stirbt Ebert mit nur 54 Jahren. Hunderttausende begleiten den Sarg des Reichspräsidenten. Im April wird Paul von Hindenburg zu Eberts Nachfolger gewählt. Hindenburg macht 1933 Adolf Hitler zum Kanzler. (3/12)

The current events in the USA seem to suggest that we are entering a new stage in #PostTruth politics.

We could call it “quantum truth” (or “Schrödinger’s facts”, for the cat lovers out there).

A short thread (1/n)
Many examples show that the notion of factual truth (or “facts”) is strongly anchored in perceptions and partisanship.

The size of a crowd is now a matter of interpretation, and “alternative facts” have the same epistemological value as quantifiable realities.

(2/n)
We have been observing this for a few years.

Now a new dynamic emerges on top of the normalization of alternative narratives: pushing *opposed narratives*

#Trump is simultaneously “doing very well” (his physician), and “showing very concerning vitals” (COS Meadows)

The only thing a negative COVID19 test means is that when you took it, your viral load wasn’t high enough to be reliably measured. And there can be a 20% FALSE NEGATIVE three days after symptoms.

WE NEED FINES, RELIABLE PUBLIC HEALTH MESSAGES AND ELECTED REPS WHO GROK SCIENCE.
A negative COVID19 test does not mean you don’t have the disease. It means you probably didn’t have it five days ago.

Ok, so last night I made a thread of using ableism as a strategy for talking about #TrumpHasCovid that will inevitably backfire on liberals, leftists and democrats.

Since then I have been saving GOOD EXAMPLES of communication around it threaded here:

THREAD:
The framing of Trump’s diagnosis as a result of his consistent recklessness even endangering the lives of those trying to protect him:
Framing his access to healthcare around the fact that all citizens should have that level of care regardless of income:

No distancing, no masks & this photo (via @nytimes) shows the #AmyConeyBarrett super-spreader event last week was INDOOR as well as outdoor, despite official claims

Attendees who later caught #COVID19:

Melania Trump

Thom Tillis
Kellyanne Conway
John Jenkins
Trump's campaign manager, Bill Stepien, has also tested positive for #COVID19

This comes days after telling staff without symptoms there's no need for them to quarantine

Perhaps, the entire White House should be put under quarantine! #DonaldTrump #TrumpCovid #TrumpHasCovid @aoc

I’ve been thinking a great deal about the Five Act structure over the past month — specifically how to apply it to factual events, namely 2020. It’s hard, there are a lot of plot threads, but work with me! Shakespeare might be proud: ( 1/ )
Act I begins after the impeachment acquittal. If it did not, too many loose ends would be in play. So, there are rumblings of a unique coronavirus in China in February. By the end of that month, China falls into a dystopic state, locking down the nation. ( 2/ )
Meanwhile, in the States, the President has been informed about the emergent threat and has chosen to do nothing about it. By 05 March, there are 64 cases of coronavirus. End Act I. ( 3/ )

But seriously:
Just because Trump made fun of people's medical conditions doesn't mean we should.
Trump DOES NOT set our moral standards.
It's 100% legitimate to mock him for the irony of his previous callousness BUT NOT just because someone we don't like fell ill.
#TrumpHasCovid
That's a nuanced point.... and this is twitter... so we'll see how well this goes for me... 😅
It helps to try and imagine things from the other side.

Imagine if we became like this... If we become this, all is lost.

Okay first thoughts:
#TrumpHasCovid

There is a political/institutional/geopolitical angle to this.

- Politically you are talking about impact on the race/replacement
- Institutional you are talking continuity of government/chain of command
- Geopolitically its opportunity

1/3
The second variable is how sick does he get

1. (next to) Nothing
2. Pretty sick but not nothing serious
3. Ventilator/incapacitated
4. Dead

Based on this a whole range of this are relevant, does he sign the 25th amendment, does Pence take the presidency etc etc

2/3
And the third variable is who else has it/gets sick.

If both Pence and Trump fall into category 3/4, then Pelosi becomes acting president, and then they question is to what degree the whole damn government is unable to operate.

Who contests for US President if a candidate kicks the bucket before elections?

It has not happened before. But the rules say, the party leadership nominates another candidate for the electoral college to chose from.

"
Both the Republican and the Democratic parties have rules in their bylaws governing how to fill the vacancy. The Party Chair calls a meeting of the National Committee, and the Committee members at the meeting vote to fill the vacancy on the ticket. A candidate must
receive a majority of the votes to win the party's nod.

The same process would happen if the vacancy were to occur after the general election but before the Electoral College voting. If a vacancy should occur on the winning ticket, it would then be the

Inevitable that Trump has Covid. Think of all the people he may have infected (police, soldiers, secret service). How will all his far right supporters square his infection with their irrational belief that Covid doesn’t exist? #TrumpHasCovid
Likely he’s tested daily. It’s possible that he may be asymptomatic but could develop symptoms within 7-10 days. Given his advanced age, morbid obesity, ill health, drug abuse & poor diet he is within one of the most vulnerable groups for Covid. Mike Pence is ‘praying’.
Apparently he may have symptoms, ABC is reporting.

Two days ago, #Trump mocked #Biden on masks: "I don't wear masks like him. Every time you see him, he's got a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away and he shows up with the biggest mask I've ever seen."

Today, he tested positive for #COVID19. #BREAKING
Given his age (74) & weight (clinically obese), @realDonaldTrump is in the highest-risk group for hospitalization from #COVID19

Melania #Trump also tested positive for #coronavirus Image
In May, @SpeakerPelosi called Trump “morbidly obese”.

At around 240 pounds, Trump’s BMI is 30+ which is considered clinically obese.

As well as weight, people are at greater risk from coronavirus if they are 70 or older & have a condition affecting the brain or nerves. Image
