From a #Systems POV Trump either did not understand the problem, or did, and chose to solve for a different problem. He solved for how to protect himself & his broken ego/self rather than for the health & well being of the nation.
As such all the resources were diverted to
addressing that hopeless problem instead of recognizing the moment and taking up the challenge of leadership.

Trump is worse than a coward...He is, and has proven repeatedly, to be an active cancerous assault on the health & well being of the country. In no case more adroitly
exampled than in how he dealt with the COVID crisis.
From the fundamental denial of its existence - publically. We learned, much later, from Woodward, that he was well aware of the actual & potential danger... and did nothing...But lie about it. And in that gap of lies &

I expect McConnell, being the consummate power pragmaticist, will start making conciliatory overtures to Biden.
No more "you will not pass anyone/anything I do not approve of" nonsense... He will pragmatically appear to be working with, while he lays his traps.
I have a concern that Schumer is not up to the task. He has been outmaneuvered by McConnell for years, mostly sputtering outrages wo much effect.
If he is driven by ego, especially if empowered by personal revenge, as his "mission", however deep inset, it will be disastrous.
We are about to see some amazing plays made on the public stage. Many, probably most of them, will not be obvious what is happening. But what we get to see will be the proverbial iceberg...only the end point of whatever is in play.

We are becoming numb to the overwhelming assault on our once upon a time deeply held and deeply loved values. But the assault is real & it is relentless.

From police brutality, children in cages, to the abuse & dismantling of the Justice dept by Tr/Barr it all warns of a fall.
I suppose no society believes it is possible "that it will, or can, happen here".

In this we deceive ourselves.

It is happening.
We have 1 last fire break in the system.
Congress has failed.
Rule of law has failed and has been overwhelmed by Barr et al.
The S.Court has failed to uphold the values/principles of the separation of powers
The courts themselves are being populated with useful incompetents.

Seeing various forms of this argument: "Look at the Mid States (the Red ones!) they don't have any problem, its just those horrible "Blue" states.
Even saw "its Gods punishment on them".

Here is one ex & my retort.

Trump(ism) has finally matured into structural divisions.
Till now we have had as a foundational principle of the country E Pluribus Unum: "out of many, one."

Increasingly this has been under great stress, accelerated by Trump(ism). Now, under this great stressor, Trump(ism) is pushing this to the max. Trump is abdicating his
responsibilities to be a public servant; to understand the needs of the country in crisis, and respond with something akin to competence. Preferring instead to be "trump", the little, petty, but machiavellian, man he is, and use the times for his own ego-stroking & self-benefit.

@LaurenWern While this sentiment is provoking - it reveals more than it tells. What we are battling in the nation now is a full on multifrontal #TrumpsWarOnAmerica. The structures, values, pillars, & customs, norms are under attack.
This is a fine synthesis of one of the major battle lines
@LaurenWern 2/ What he is saying, in essence is a) Money is more important than People. But not just money as a function of transactions & means of trade, but money as wealth, as a function of power.
So it is not "Citizens" but a return to old feudal times of the landed nobility& peasents.
@LaurenWern 3/ b) he is making a quintessential value statement at the level of (and in direct contradiction to) "We hold These Truths to be Self Evident".
Its simply a completely different foundational premise upon which to organize society. It is not "new" in the sense that some form of

Therein lies the rub. In order to have a free society, one with the ability to grow and expand, you have to be grounded on principles, not law. Now our principles are being violated & there is no law to stop them. Our feckless complicit Congress is unwilling to rise to the moment
1/ This should be worded differently...better. Point is this: Our LAWS ought emerge out of our principles. That is the central idea of a free society. Thus we have the Constitution& more the Bill of Rights as our founding ideas. This is the basis of Rule of Law.
2/ That state is most corrupt whose laws are most numerous. ~Tacitus. Now you hear a call for a laws to stop Trump from profiting from the Presidency along w any number of other violations of norms. Hitherto these were Principles that were respected by the holders of office...
