Ala' al-Din Khalji's death in 1316 threw the empire into turmoil for four years. Many Delhi elites supported Khusraw Shāh. Alaā€™ā€™s Warden of the Marches, Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq, saw the Indian convert as a usurper and marched on Delhi.
Khusrawā€™s supporters saw the Tughluqs as uncouth ā€œnomadsā€ of uncertain ethnic background and zealots.
