🧵on Jews of Djerba جربة 🇹🇳

1) Djerba, an island off the coast of #Tunisia, is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, and the 2nd largest in the Arab world

Jews have lived on this island for over 2,500 years
2) Jews found refuge in Dejrba following the destruction of the First Temple in #Jerusalem

The high priest Tzadok (Kings I 2:35) along with his fellow Kohanim escaped to this distant Island and settled there. They carried stones from the altar as a memoir of the destruction
3) As such, this community is mostly made up of Kohanim. Genetic tests show the vast majority of the community share a common ancestor with Cohens from other communities across the world, both in MENA and Europe

Djerba is popularly know as "The Island of the Kohanim"

As a follow-up to my article on the #WorldCup2022 for @PillarCatholic, a couple of notes on religious aspects of this tournament.
pillarcatholic.com/world-cup-feve…
1. This is the first time the World Cup is being played in a Muslim country, and only the second outside of the traditionally Christian world. The first was South Korea & Japan in 2002.
2. 2002 also marked the furthest a traditionally Muslim country ever progressed in the World Cup, with #Turkey placing 3rd, after beating South Korea in a very exciting game.

A group of #Tunisian's is tweeting about the situation in the country, tweeting in English to target foreign media and decision-makers. They're doing this to counter the narrative spread by Ennahdha, Islamist party, and their operatives abroad that the President is doing a coup.
They consider that the President is acting upon the wishes of the general public, that he is supported by most Tunisians. They believe he'll fight corruption, end the reign of Islamists and restore order. His relying on the military so much is a good sign to them
The military are highly respect as they never openly interfered in politics. And today they are respected because they interfere in politics. How long will that last? Go figure.

[Thread] 1/ This is a thread on Twitter manipulation around #Tunisia, where the current President is accused of instigating a coup. One Arabic trend translates as "Tunisians revolt against the Brotherhood". I analysed around 12000 tweets from 6800 unique accounts #disinformation
2/ The trend is interesting primarily because (regardless of what one thinks of #Tunisian politics or indeed, the Muslim Brotherhood), the Muslim Brotherhood has been the bogeyman for the UAE, Egypt and Saudi, and invoked to justify authoritarian and unconstitutional measures
3/ Firstly, who is tweeting on the hashtag? Well network analysis shows it is mostly Emirate and Saudi influencers. The most retweeted and influential accounts are monther72, faljubairi and s_hm2030 and emarati_shield. See below for some screenshots. #Tunisia

The #ArabSpring may have been sparked by an Arab man — Mohamed Bouazizi, the #Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire in desperation — but they will be finished by Arab women.

Until the rage shifts from the oppressors in our presidential palaces to the oppressors on our street corners and in our homes, our revolution has not even begun.

#ArabSpring
When people took to the streets Dec. 2010...they were calling for employment, freedom, dignity.I think they weren't ready to accept freedom means all freedoms...women's freedom, sexual freedom, individual freedom. They're not ready for such a revolution

Our first ‘Central Mediterranean Regional Analysis’ has been published – covering the period between 18 March - 30 June 2019. During this period, we were alerted to 24 distress situations in the Central #Mediterranean region, involving over 1,700 people.
alarmphone.org/en/2019/07/04/…
9 of these 24 boats were returned to #Libya. 7 were rescued to #Malta and 4 to #Italy. 1 boat was intercepted by the #Tunisian coastguards. The fate of 3 boats remains unknown. Until 30 June 2019, about 3,800 people have arrived in #Europe via the Central #Mediterranean route.
Our regional analysis focuses on 4 main topics: 1) NGOs rescuing at sea and attempts of European authorities to criminalise them. Though facing repression, they do not give up! Currently, #Mediterranea and #Sea-Eye are on search and rescue missions near the Libyan death-zone.

#Solidarity with survivors & #Tunisian rescuers! 75 ppl are still not allowed to disembark in Zarzis after being rescued by the Tunisian ‘Maridive 601’. According to Tunisian fishermen & the NGO FTDES, the boat was ignored by #Italian & #Maltese authorities when in distress. Image
The 75 ppl fled from Libya & are stranded on the ‘Maridive’ with 3 of them suffering from severe health issues. Together with #FTDES we condemn the “#European practice of non-assistance and restriction of maritime rescue operations” which create these situations.
We also protest the fact that even when disembarked, the rights of the 75 are dramatically violated, as in #Tunisia they cannot find the rights and protection they urgently need. Find here our full statement and further images: tiny.cc/7cwm7y

I wrote this in January when #Tunisia was mulling equal inheritance for women and men, and how that revolutionary concept was upsetting conservatives. Bravo #Tunisia! google.com/amp/s/www.wash…
7yrs after #Tunisia sparked 1at protests in “Arab Spring,” & ousted its long-standing dictator, it is generating inspiration & anger yet again by upending what many consider more difficult to overthrow than dictators-for-life: Islamic laws & taboos on marriage & inheritance.
