Elon Musk has purposely degraded the value of Twitter because it is an impediment to his desire for unaccountable power. Responsible progressive commentators must open Mastodon accounts, encourage their audiences to join Mastodon, & set up cross-posting to make it easy for all…

0/ In the past weeks, #Mastodon network grew by 50% (and counting). A growth level that would impress any investor. And a growth level that makes many of the network's older users weary. To grow or not to grow – this is the big question for the #Fediverse. A 🧵:

2/ New users are organically joining Mastodon, at a steady pace of 300k/week. Will the institutional backbone grow and adjust as well? I recently published an opinion on this in @techpolicypress: techpolicy.press/priorities-to-…

Twitter vs. Mastodon - how do they work?

Trump's brand-new social network 'Truth Social' used Mastodon's code. @joinmastodon

Mastodon's revenue is not dependent on advertisers like other social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Tiktok, etc. The ad-based revenue model isn't necessarily good in all cases as ads=tracking leads to the users -> product and advertisers -> customers Credit: Four Week MBA

@elonmusk @BillyM2k You sir are also a darling of the alt-right. I guess maybe since you haven't contacted me in your 5 alarm ongoing #Twittershutdown fire you don't plan on hiring me as an advisor. so I will give all tips out for free.

Don't be a darling of the alt-right. #ElonTips
@elonmusk @BillyM2k and not that i promote the idea but you just kicked sand in the face of the remaining supporters you got the alt-right saying #alexjones can't come back. They hate you too now #Elontips

So, in re: #RIPTwitter, read this important thread I posted here, then come back here, because I have a question (this will be a long 🧵 if you read all the embedded threads).
Focusing on Twitter as town square:
Here's another one, on Twitter as an emergency management too:
Finally, here's my late-night end-of-Twitter screed — less essential here, but I'm focused on tech fake-it-til-you-make-it culture.

Judging by the influx of new followers I am getting over at Mastodon, a lot of people are starting to think that Twitter's future looks really bleak. So a few thoughts on #RIPTwitter, the future of #sciencetwitter and all that:
First of all, I have no insight into what is going on at Twitter. I am simply someone who has been addicted to this particular platform for many years, really loves what it has allowed me to do and hopefully has contributed the kind of content that made Twitter valuable to many.
As others have pointed out Twitter is as unlikely to go up in flames tomorrow as it is to become a well-run, nicely moderated global town square. But like @oneunderscore__ I find it increasingly hard to see any good outcome at the end of all this

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name (1/4)
that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a (2/4)
single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the (3/4)

2/14 #Mastodon is not ONE site like Twitter, but a network of many independent servers. No matter which server you join, you can follow and be followed across servers. Don't let it confuse you. It does not matter.
3/14 You can always move to another server later and take your followers and followings with you. It is like choosing email with Gmail or another provider. Here you can pick a server: joinmastodon.org/servers

🧵Okay it's #ElectionDay (go vote! voting is a valid harm reduction strategy.)

I know this birdsite is going to hell in a handbasket, but while we're all still here, I put together a THREAD on what the midterms will likely mean for tech policy fights that impact human rights.
This is going to be a bit of a ruthless analysis of how I see the election results impacting hot button tech policy issues like Section 230, content moderation, privacy legislation, the FTC and FCC, antitrust and Big Tech accountability, etc.
I'm not gonna spend as much time explaining the substance of each issue, more just how the political dynamics around them are likely to shift depending on the makeup of the House and Senate. But I'll try to link to relevant campaigns / news coverage to dive deeper.

My current research involves interviewing U.S. congressional staffers about how decisions are made in the Senate & House & who they trust for accurate information. 1/
The work isn’t published yet, but I can say it’s shocking how much of what happens in politics is now influenced by #Twitter specifically & knowing how sound bites will land there. /2
This is one of many contributors to extreme political polarization.

So if Twitter burns down 🔥 we may be better off. #TwitterMigration /3

The release notes of the latest Twitter update do not bode well for the future of the platform.

I am choosing #Mastodon as a backup plan, and not Substack or Instagram, because I wasn't on Twitter to preach, but for discussions.

A few tips to join Mastodon 🧵 What's New Version History ...
1️⃣ Use fedifinder.glitch.me to find the Mastodon accounts of people you follow and are followed by on Twitter. It scans their bios for mentions of Mastodon accounts.

You will also see on which servers people are, which is useful to chose one.
2️⃣ Directly go to the server of your choice to sign up, or look for one on joinmastodon.org/servers or on the Mastodon app.

Don't overthink this server choice, it matters less than you may fear: you can follow people across servers. You won't be stuck in a silo.

So, I've started to invest real effort into moving to Mastodon and taper down Twitter. Some tips and thoughts about this new social space the turn that Twitter is taking - a🧵 1/
First: I love Twitter and I am sad. I go reluctantly after 12 years. Twitter is one of the reasons I started the Thesiswhisperer blog. It showed me to the range of things other people were doing in terms of blogging, videos, podcasts in the education space. It inspired me 🧵2/
I have more than 50K followers. In a university context, the number drew interest from 'higher ups' to what I was doing. I could talk to, and about, management about things that bothered me. My 'social stats' gave my opinion weight. This is a form of power. Hard to give up 🧵/4

I spent the last two days talking to a lot of researchers including @CT_Bergstrom, @devisridhar and @markmccaughrean about the #TwitterMigration of researchers and scientists.

The article is here and a short thread to come:

As part of my reporting I created an account at @joinmastodon myself. So if you have already moved there or are moving there, you can find me: mas.to/@kakape
@CT_Bergstrom @devisridhar @markmccaughrean @joinmastodon Things are happening faster than expected:
@cfiesler, who has studied the migration of online communities told me that a week ago, she wasn't expecting things to move this fast. Generally, these migrations tend to be more like “watching a shopping mall go slowly out of business.”
