Children are being sidelined by covid-19 - hugely important editorial in the @bmj_latest from Ian Sinha, @ Davara Bennett and David Taylor-Robinson bmj.com/content/369/bm…
"although children are not the face of this pandemic, they are deeply affected... Lockdown in poor quality and overcrowded housing, with inequitable access to safe green space, will disrupt children’s lives, some more than others"
"Immediate action is needed to put money in pockets of families w/ children. A modest increase in #ChildBenefit of £10/week would reduce child poverty by 5%. More generous #UniversalCredit payments to families w/ kids should be a priority & the #TwoChildLimit should be scrapped."

@CommonsWorkPen Dare tries to protect her children as much as she can from her financial worries: ‘I just try and not let it get to my children. I try and be more positive about my situation…I’m the only person that they have, so I don’t allow anything to worry them.’ cpag.e-activist.com/page/50435/act…
@CommonsWorkPen Katy says: ‘By the time you pay all the bills and you buy food shopping, if you need anything else throughout the week, sometimes it doesn’t last…. This morning, @CommonsWorkPen are speaking to reps from @MuslimCouncil of Britain, @churchofengland and Interlink about the impact of the #twochildlimit - which is limiting support for families with children
@CommonsWorkPen @MuslimCouncil @churchofengland The policy should be lifted because in the UK we believe that every child should have the best start in life. This means access to free healthcare, a good education & a childhood free from poverty. We wouldn’t turn away a sick child from our hospitals or stop them going to school
@CommonsWorkPen @MuslimCouncil @churchofengland The two-child limit denies families the support they need from our social security system when they experience tough times - trapping kids in poverty. We need to help children thrive, by supporting parents to raise happy, healthy children.

Today we, @churchofengland, @womensaid, @turn2us_org and @refugeecouncil have published new research on the #twochildlimit [THREAD]
About 160,000 families have been affected already; most are working families and most have three children.
As a result of this policy, 300,000 children will be pushed into poverty and one million children, already in poverty, will be pushed even deeper into poverty by 2023/24.

“We know that two thirds of families affected by the two-child limit are in work. 70% of people affected are children. The two-child limit targets cuts in support to families already at the highest risk of poverty”. - our head of policy @josietucker
“You couldn’t design a policy better targeted to increase child poverty. At least 200,000 additional children will go into poverty as a result of this policy alone.” @josietucker on the #twochildlimit
“Some children are seen as less worthy of support than others. This undermines a fundamental principle of the social security system which would ensure that entitlement is linked to need” @josietucker at the @CommonsWorkPen inquiry into the two-child limit

He notes that the #benefitcap, #twochildlimit and #bedroomtax have 'made it much harder for people to make ends meet' and is particularly critical of Chancellor's refusal to lift the benefits freeze while raising income tax thresholds that don't 'move the needle' on poverty (3/7)
