This part is really important: “Mr. Galloway’s dismissal was also because of financial misconduct, dishonesty in the investigation of the complaint, alcohol consumption with students, and a previous instance of sexual relations with a student.”

The effect is real. Whether every tweet was fair and accurate is perhaps another question.

Disgraced former #UBC prof Amie Wolf, who is accused of having falsely identified as Indigenous, is now lashing out at us.

Like many, we were initially very sympathetic to Wolf's story & shared it here on this platform in addition to reaching out to her privately. 1/6
But last week, we also shared this troubling tweet by professor Darryl Leroux of Saint Mary's University in Halifax, a leading expert in raceshifting and white claims to Indigenous identity. 2/6
After we shared that tweet, Wolf wrote this blog post about us & this series of Facebook msgs. She calls us "little ones," "kids," "babies, "immature thinkers," "incapable of critical thinking," "a bunch of dopes." She dismisses our post as "moronic," "a "piece of garbage." 3/6 ImageImage

Accommodations for students and all others but #UBC still wants to get the goods on faculty - have we done a good job 'pivoting'? Like, is this really the most important service for UBC to provide right now?
Oh, & here is how important this is as people self isolate, worry over restrictions on civil liberties, and find themselves with diminished economic capacity -

Not F'ng important at all.
And when I send a reply to the eager beavers in keep the evaluations running here's their delightful canned response.

Thank you, #UBC Executive for cancelling the Free Speech Club's #AndyNgo event.

Good luck, JCCF and John Carpay, with your wild threats about legal action. Knock yourself out. If you actually have the gumption to follow through. If you do, I'm looking forward to you failing. 1/
JCCF "demand letter":

"We urge that UBC not abandon one of 'its primary functions' of 'providing a forum where ideas can be expressed, debated & challenged.' Concerns for safety & security must be addressed in accordance with Cd’s rule of law as a free & democratic society." 2/
The JCCF letter to the UBC president, sent on Dec 31, 2019, cites from the university's web page on freedom of expression. Not really something you can base a law suit on. Here's a link to the university's statements on freedom of expression:

Learning about key components of the Athena SWAN Process which has been used widely in the UK (140+ members) #UBC @NSERC_CRSNG
First step is a rigorous self-assessment to identify issues and create an action plan for addressing them. This step must be tailored to the institution, can’t just rote “copy” others.
Next step is apply to a peer-reviewed panel for “Bronze” designation which means institution has robustly done these things, and now has four years to work on the plan before applying again

Our 2017-18 #UBC students are just a little over 1 week away from finishing their Master in #DataScience degree! So as they start to look for their jobs, I ask the #rstats and #python communities to help me give helpful advice to assist with their search! 1/n
Some of the most useful job search/landing advice I have heard is:
- start a blog
- display your work on @github
- contribute to #opensource projects
- volunteer to help organize/lead a session with a organization or meetup group
- ask people to go for informational interviews
I should also probably add "be active on twitter" to this list too ;p
