#Macron following #G7:

#NATO has made a choice to support #Ukraine in this war without going to war with #Russia

France and other NATO allies will continue arming Ukraine. “We want this to be efficient but we do not want to be cobelligérant”
#Macron shows a chart showing France’s contribution to securing #NATO’s eastern frontier.

He says this will be coordinated by EU, as part of NATO efforts, not in competition with it.
🇫🇷Macron says he (and 🇩🇪🇮🇹) pressed #G7 partners 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇯🇵🇨🇦 to "show solidarity in the management of #UkraineRefugees".

"For reasons of geography Europe of course is the first destination." 3.5 million have come to EU. Other 4 in G7 not taking refugees without hard-to-get visas.

Entering the summit of 🇪🇺 defence ministers in Brussels, 🇩🇪German Defence Minister Christine Lambrecht says the EU's new rapid military deployment capability will be the "military heart" of the new European security policy.

It's a "clear signal" to 🇷🇺Russia, she says.
🇫🇮Finland's Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen says the #UkraineWar means there must be "more cooperation" in 🇪🇺EU defence, and "more steps forward".

"I hope we get results today, and later this week."

#Finland is not in #NATO but has recently been participating in NATO summits.
The defence minister of 🇸🇪#Sweden, also not in #NATO but recently in meetings, sounds same tone on the need for 🇪🇺EU to coordinate its military response.

He also echoes other ministers today on #Mariupol: "What Putin and the Russian government are doing is a repeated #WarCrime"

🇪🇺 foreign affairs ministers have just started their meeting here in Brussels to discuss possible new #RussiaSanctions.

Poland is calling for a "complete trade blockade" including energy. That remains a tall ask.
"Today will be a very long day," says EU foreign affairs chief @JosepBorrellF.

"Russia is really doing a lot of #WarCrimes. That's the word, I have to say that. What's happening in #Mariupol is a massive war crime - destroying everything."
"Europe cannot give an impression of fatigue," says #Lithuania FM Landsbergis entering #FAC. "We cannot get tired of imposing sanctions"

"There's a feeling in the room to sit down & take a breath. I think that's a bad message"

It's "unavoidable" that they talk about an #OilBan.

It is excellent news that the British government has finally resolved to get out of the way and begin to allow the country to provide the support -- including shelter here in the UK -- for Ukrainian refugees that millions of Brits are aching to provide.

However...
This isn't done yet. As @sundersays lays out, the gov't still hasn't said exactly how this is going to work, and there's tons of room for this to go wrong.

The public will have to keep enormous pressure @ukhomeoffice and @pritipatel if Ukrainians are to avoid the hostile environment that afflicts every other entrant to the UK.

@mrjamesob @itvnews @thetimes @BBCNews #StandWithUkraine #UkraineUnderAttaсk #UkraineConflict #UkraineRefugees #WaiveVisas Ukrainian refugees wanting to come to the UK are being forced through a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare. Let me tell you my grandma's story. 1/6 Image
This is Kharkiv, a city constantly under shelling. This building is ten minutes' walk from her house. My grandmother did not feel safe, so she got out. That was when we encountered the hell of British bureaucracy. 2/6 Image
My mother has written an account of the process you can read here: docs.google.com/document/d/1pH…

Long story short: evacuating my grandmother out of a warzone was the easy part. She is now stuck in Krakow awaiting a visa appointment. The earliest available is in two weeks. 3/6

Another shout out for @SirRogerGale who has put it on the record that the Home Secretary @pritipatel lied to the HoC on #UkraineRefugees #UkraineUnderAttaсk

“That in itself in a normal administration would be a resigning matter” 👏
Meanwhile even my MP @JGray isn’t happy with the #Ukrainerefugee catastrophic system.

But his xenophobia is confirmed by him pointing out that his constituents are professional and “are very well educated and English speaking of course” and he doesn’t support a visa waiver.
And fantastic contribution from @timfarron pointing out the Govt has misread the country.

Why hasn’t Brexit delivered on freeing us from red tape? 🤡
