On my run today I was mulling over why Doug Ford has decided to change isolation requirements at the start of the 2022-2023 school year, right as kids head #BackToClass, when every metric (cases, %pos, hospitalizations, deaths) is higher this year than last #SafeSeptember #onted Figures comparing cases, te...
The Minister of Education spent the summer repeatedly stating that he wants Ontario kids to have a normal, stable, and enjoyable school year. He even launched the #PlanToCatchUp and said he would give parents back some of their own money, roughly $70/kid, to help kids catch up.
Despite Mr. Lecce telling parents that our kids will have a normal, stable, and enjoyable school year, he has yet to demonstrate exactly how he will help ensure our kids have the best shot at a safe, uninterrupted, in-person school year, the 4th of the pandemic. #CovidIsNotOver

As promised: my thread on last night's Zoom q&a with new @BCGreens leader @SoniaFurstenau's thoughts on #bced. I'll save the hashtags for the end and unroll the thread when I'm done in case anyone wants to RT. 1/
Sonia was and is disappointed with the @bcndp back-to-school plan bc instead of seeing this as a chance to do things differently and offer alt to in-class learning, she says it's been too much about jamming the situation into existing #bced framework which was already not wkg 2/
As a teacher, Sonia says, when you're trying to teach something, you start from where you want your stds to get to and work backward from there and that's how #bced model should be: look at the needs for young people today and then wk back to figure out how to achieve that. 3/

ON school COVID testing update, Sep 8, plague year 1. Lecce: on-site testing if request by PHU, asymptomc testing of high school sutdents. Yaffe: believes there are plans to increase capacity, but we don't need it. Discussions re asymptomatic testing ongoing. #unsafeseptember 1/
Dissonance anyone? How could Yaffe think there's no need for extra capacity with fall coming and standing advice to get tested with any symptom? (Ford sez test!) Why doesn't she know if it's being increased? Lecce's asymptomatic testing plan clearly not firmed up in her view. 2/
Meanwhile, on ground sightings in at least one Toronto hospital of saliva being collected alongside swabs. Recent public health comments to media about pooled testing being validated. Are these pools saliva pools? It's all very woo-woo. 3/

SickKids told @fordnation that smaller class sizes were a priority.

He keeps referencing his four daughters, and how nervous he'd be. But my kids are in school now and they're not doing enough to make classrooms safe.

Smaller class sizes.

"We're doing everything in our powers through the medical advice." -@fordnation

Classes are still too big.
HVAC isn't happening.
No mandatory masking for K-3.
Insufficient #sickdays to enable parents to keep sick kids home.

It's not good enough.

Doctors are telling you we need smaller class sizes. Why aren't we doing this?

Stop vilifying teachers, @Sflecce . You need us. The kids need us. The economy needs us. We will go back to work and make the best out of every obstacle thrown at us because that’s what we do. /1 #onted #firelecce @ETFOeducators #ETFO
We give up so much of our own time for kids. Stop implying the opposite. Our unions haven’t instructed us to stop anything, so you are both lying to the public and making our jobs harder by trying to turn the public against us. /2
The hardest part of our job is the disrespect that comes from some of the general public who don’t understand the actual ins and outs of our profession. I would expect the Minister of Education to respect and defend us. We are what makes our province’s education system great. /3

'We're doing everything we can, we're not going to spare a penny,' says @fordnation, while citing the experts whose advice he's choosing not to take to invest in smaller class sizes for a safer return to schools for our kids, ed workers, and communities. #onted #UnsafeSeptember

About schools returning... we aren’t just talking about opening schools, we are taking about regulating the largest indoor public gatherings to happen since COVID-19 began. #onted #SafeSeptember @fordnation @maritstiles @TOPublicHealth @epdevilla @Anniekidder @parentaction4ed 1/4
Health shouldn’t be the first priority, it should be the ONLY priority. If schools are successful it paves the way for society to continue to expand. If schools get hit with frequent closings, and/or initiate wildfire spread due to lack of distancing...2/4
...we all experienced the last 5 months - we know what that looks like. One path leads to minimal disruption in society moving forward and students flourishing in learning. The other path leads to constant disruption and closures and potentially lockdown measures once again. 3/4

.@fordnation and @Sflecce standing by plan that ignores the key recommendation (smaller class sizes) from their own consulted experts.

I'm tired of talking about schools, but what else can we talk about when this government is not taking this seriously? #UnsafeSeptember #onpoli
They keep repeating the same talking points, ignoring that we're telling them their talking points will not keep our kids, education workers, and families safe. This is not a good plan. #onted #UnsafeSeptember
$30,000,000 for new teachers is only enough for ~400 new teachers. There are ~4700 public schools in Ontario.

My family has privilege. We could pull our kids from public education tomorrow. This is what breaks my heart. This is not a real choice. Parents shouldn’t be in the position of making these decisions #UnsafeSeptember
I'm from a family and neighbourhood that, by every data point, wouldn't have options. Racialized people from lower-income neighbourhoods are not expendable. Older folks in LTC are not expendable. Teachers and students shouldn't be put at risk thestar.com/news/gta/2020/…
I’m a fairweather social media user. I don’t get into Twitter tempests in a teapot. But when I think about #UnsafeSeptember, I get really mad. And then hopeful. I see the hunger for real leadership. So this is when we can make Twitter work for us. To connect to create pressure.

We need smaller class sizes, @fordnation. You're talking about 32 people in a kindergarten room. Have you seen what that's like?

If it's 'not about dollars and cents,' show us. Invest properly. Reduce class sizes. That's the key recommendation and you aren't doing it. #onpoli
"I'm relying on @SickKidsNews, @CHEO, Public Health, the health table, that's who I'm relying on. The health and the science."

"We'll see how it goes."

I don't understand why this is the approach our govt is taking to reopening schools. What needs to happen for them to be willing to invest properly in keeping our kids safe? Why is @fordnation willing to take chances with their lives? 1/7 #onpoli #onted
I already lost a child to illness in the school where my living children still go. Now we have to choose between sending them back to an environment that is being made unsafe during a pandemic, or continuing to keep them home where they miss out on their education. 2/7
I am not a teacher. I don't have the skills, and I can't give them what they get from being in class with other kids. @fordnation is telling us he'd be nervous to send his kids, but isn't doing what it takes to make classrooms safe.

Why?

After the government’s announcement I lie here sleepless, simultaneously moving between anger and tears. I feel devastated and powerless and can do nothing to quiet these big emotions except put my thoughts into writing, with no particular audience in mind
“How could the fail us so badly?”

First, I will tell you why I am angry. I woke up prior to yesterday’s announcement with just a sliver of optimism. Throughout the last two years, I have not been a fan of this government’s education policies.
Well, if I’m being honest, not many of their policies, education or otherwise. The last 2 years have seemed like the way a 16 year old would govern. Come up with an idea, rush to implement it, watching it fail miserably and scrap it because it didn’t work.

Now that we *know*, w certainty, that the plan is for an #UnsafeSeptember, I’m going to say it – bc I believe that I have a responsibility to:

1998, v. #PCPO govt: political protest.

I believe, *firmly*, that we need to consider having history repeat itself. #ETFO #onted #onlab
And I’ve waited on tweeting that (although, truth be told, it’s what I’ve been thinking for *weeks*) b/c, again, I believe we had a collective responsibility to wait to hear what the plan was from these Cons. #ETFO #onted #onlab
As is *always* the case, though, w retrograde, destructive govts of this ilk, they’ve shown themselves to be exactly what they are: *incapable* of truly valuing what is, arguably, our most foundational public service/institution. #ETFO #onted #onlab
