Dr Claire Stewart presents the results of the @ANZCA Gender Equity survey and they are devastating- almost half of women have experienced bullying and over a third have had difficulty obtaining a position, compared to just 3% of men. 1/5 ImageImage
The nature of the disrespect experienced by women anaesthetists is insidious, not overt- this makes it particularly challenging to address. This is amplified by a lack of awareness/allyship by men.☹️ 2/5 ImageImage
Nearly half of women anaesthetists experienced #discrimination relating to pregnancy 🤨🤰3/5 Image

It’s rare for me to find a non fiction book that I can’t put down. I know I’m late to the party on this one but I finally got my hands on it. I wanted an early night last night but could not stop turning the pages! Thank you @Positivteacha @mr_englishteach ImageImage
It’s full of such useful ways to rethink the dominant narrative around boys. I will be trying to change my language away from toxic masculinity and towards tender / non-tender masculinity , which will also give me a chance to mention the book to everyone ! #tendermasculinity
The first 2 chapters alone everyone should read: Roberts @mr_englishteach explains why all the typical ‘common sense’ approaches to boys’ engagement are flawed, risking entrenching low expectations/low self esteem through competition (there are always losers as well as winners)

A couple of years ago, during the #Pandemic, a number of women directors (including me), had had enough of the inequality amongst male & #femaledirectors of #documentaries in the UK industry. @WeAreDocWomen was a result of a number of women coming together ...
to effect real change. #WeareDocWomen was already formed a number of years earlier, but it wasn't until the #Pandemic that the glaring inequality amongst directors became so obvious. Then the #tvgendergapreport came out which showed just how bad that inequality was ...
Here's the background to that report - some of which I'm going to quote from in the following tweets ..… #wearedocwomen #femalefilmmakers #timesup #timeforchange #5050pledge

On evidence:

People will focus all their attention on the minutiae but you need to look at it in context- at the big picture.
On people:

The "halo effect" is deeply underestimated.

This is when one trait of a person or thing is used to make an overall judgment of that person or thing. It supports rapid decisions, even if biased ones.

I don't know where to begin with this...
He says racism is a societal problem but science is not, because it sits above it.
He shrugs his shoulders and says we need patience for diversity to work its way through the system.
It's complacent and it's wrong.…
Science, as an endeavour, is a construct of society. It, and the people doiing it, have all the same biases as wider society. People then recruit people who look and act like them, people who have similar backgrounds who they can bond with. #unconsciousbias
This wholly non-diverse body of scientists then become the face of science, and the next generation of diverse kids look up at them and think, 'that career isn't really for people like me'. Lack of diversity breeds lack of diversity.
