Update/background on this situation:
@janis_wilds helped an older #disabled #unhoused woman discharged from a hospital emergency room to the streets of #SanDiego with no place to recuperate.
She had been living (?) on a bus stop bench since CHRISTMAS!
This is all too common
1/
Fortunately: Janis coordinated w/@Housing4Hmless to find a hotel room until Tuesday BUT- it was not an #ADA room.
The woman's wheelchair could not go into the bathroom, so a bedside commode was essential for her dignity & health.
2/
Many thanks to friends at #JewishFamilyOrg for providing exactly what this woman needs: A commode that allows her to transfer from a wheelchair.
I share this as a reminder: Providing shelter/hotel rooms for PEH w/disabilities is only one step in keeping them safe & healthy

So disappointed to hear @KPBS #MiddayEdition hosting #BobMcElroy from #AlphaProjectSD
Have they reviewed his salary & tax returns?
Taxpayers subsidize his shelters w/horrible conditions
Few people get #housing after a shelter stay

@inewsource @dulaney ImageImageImageImage
He mentions his staff struggles to afford rent-
Perhaps he could demonstrate "personal responsibility" by not driving a Maserati?
Or reduce his $245K salary & pay caseworkers doing direct services more so they aren't #housing insecure?

#SanDiego criminalizes people living in #poverty & #homelessness
When #unhoused people are cited for encroachment they are given the option to "work off" fines by doing free labor for #AlphaProjectSD
Meanwhile: Alpha gets @CityofSanDiego contracts to provide this labor

1/On Friday. Dec. 23, Judge Ryu granted a preliminary injunction to stop #SanFrancisco from enforcing ordinances that prohibit involuntarily homeless individuals from sitting, lying, or sleeping on public property. However, this does not mean #sweeps will cease completely.
2/The ruling, “does not prevent the city from enforcing laws against public nuisance, protecting accessibility and sidewalk path of travel, or abating unsanitary conditions.”

3/These types of abatements happen in #Berkeley, which has serious consequences for #unhoused residents’ mental and physical health. “When you consistently lose your stuff in this manner, you begin to lose your mind,” said Eren, a camp resident. bitly.ws/yciE

It was awesome to give a presentation w/ my friends at the reciprocity collective {who do outreach w/ #unhoused folks in #denver} to a students from ⁦@DePaulU⁩ on #policy #advocacy & what it can look like when you center #communitypower #copolitics@ProgressNowCO
There’s a beautiful thing that happens when we build policy with people most impacted, & leaders who understand social determinants of health, & students, & direct service providers. #copolitics #denverliving shout out to Amanda Orta - who runs programming for COVIVO #policy
Chicago has very similar niche #housing issues as #Denver - a group of parents from south side built policy development w/ #workingparents in Denver last yr - we convened it, it’s awesome to see parents & young ppl advocating for complex housing issues. In their communities.

Thankful to see Gianna Horton from the Denver Justice Project & @intrfthalliance and their great questions to the candidates for the Independent Monitor position.

Have you heard of the candidates?

Bit.ly/IndependentMon…

They are going in. #denverliving #copolitics
Shara Smith coming through @intrfthalliance with some great questions:

“What do you believe is the role of the independent monitor of ensuring the safety of marginalized groups? “
Candidate Liz Castle says we should have police & law enforcement make better connections to communities, not all communities are the same and need different approaches.

Mary Opler is speaking about #ClubQ & how hate crimes have sky rocketed, that Denver can do more.

.@vosdscott was talking about #homelessness about 35 minutes into the VOSD podcast from a few days ago. I've spent some time thinking through what he & @andy_keatts were talking about.
I read about/ hear most people reducing #unhoused people to abstractions and dismissing what is obvious about living #homeless: the stress of not having your own residence makes you kind of crazy. It's natural.
People with means and a few rungs up on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs are blind to where the homeless are. thoughtco.com/maslows-hierar…

Accountability

Flowers, I will go see she said.

Headed to Esplanade (cuz this photo alone would check a box but would actually be cheating - the power of “optics” or manufactured data whose lives & careers are Twitter).

Question everything you see
See like a #pediatrician Image
I shall see from a new perspective she said - I will cross on the other side.

(Actually, I wanted to be on the other side but would have to walk a block to cross so, fine, I’ll cross on this side. Bah humbug). Image
I shall admire the barely born green hope unfurling into the crisp Spring air, fragile yet #resilient, she said

(Yay #Science and @museumofscience #BostonStrong #Boston ... and yes, and requisite monuments to male anatomy and war as well) Image

Minneapolis: Justice for Breonna Taylor Protest pscp.tv/w/ccUc0DFheVFW…
“Breonna Taylor’s life is just as important as George Floyd’s.”

Community organizer Mel Reeves speaks at Powderhorn Park in #Minneapolis, adding the only reason that the case of 23-year-old Elijah McClain is now getting attention is because of mass protests.
“Our Black women are the pillar of our community and we have to start treating them like it.”

Tajir Adams (sp?) speaks about the intersecting oppressions against women & against #BlackPeople endured specifically by Black women.

1/ This is my Dad... This is the very last photo taken of us together before he died Homeless in Dallas back in the 90’s. For decades I I
would not talk about his death. Not even to my best friends in #LaJolla due to the extreme Homeless Hate & Shaming I see 1st hand
2/ I always walked with a huge hole in my heart. And every single time I heard my own friends in #LaJolla & #PacificBeach speak so evil about our #unhoused neighbors it stung deep to my very core.
3/ It took decades to finally tell OUR story in it’s entirety with the the help & mentorship of @RHYMEFEST & his wife. We met at the very first screening of @ThePublicFilm at the @SBIFF Rhymefest then had me watch his own documentary In My Father’s House.
