Professor Johan Rockström, Director of @PIK_Climate talks about tipping points in this thread.

“West Antarctica has potentially crossed the tipping point. If this is correct we have to revise our projected sealevel rise for this century from roughly 1m to 2m.”

[THREAD 1/5]
When the Arctic tips over, it turns from a cooling system into a heating system.

@jrockstrom explains this using July 2012 as example. The Arctic took up 300 Exajoules of extra energy in just 2 weeks. That is equal to half of the world’s annual energy consumption.

[THREAD 2/5]
Professor Rockström compares the IPCC assessment reports 3, 4 and 5 regarding the estimated risk for crossing “human induced catastrophic tipping points”.

This threshold came down from 4° to 2° over time as the scientific understanding evolved.
What will AR6 bring?

Thread: Blatant #ClimateDenial has lost. The new conflict is whether #ClimateChange is a crisis requiring urgent social and #economic transformation, or something we can adapt to incrementally while carrying on with business as usual. 1/40
2/ A recent opinion piece by Bjorn Lomborg in the @globeandmail is representative of the 'business as usual argument'. Let's deconstruct it to see how this gets passed off as the pragmatic point of view, and why it's false. theglobeandmail.com/opinion/articl…
3/ The basic tactic is this: provide a few common-sense truths to gain the air of pragmatism and then feed us the story we're desperate to hear: that everything will be fine, that growth will outpace #ClimateDamages and life can carry on as usual.

Tonight on the @CNN #climateforum, Democratic candidates will talk through their plans to rapidly transition our country to clean energy. We’re guessing we’ll hear a lot about #renewables & carbon pricing. But what will they say about #nuclear energy?

#DemDebates
Will they mention that it’s the largest source of carbon free electricity in the US?

#climateforum @wolfblitzer @ErinBurnett @andersoncooper @ChrisCuomo @DonLemon
thx:@GovNuclear
Will anyone point out that, considering the scale of the challenge, we should get rid of fossil fuels before even thinking about getting rid of nuclear?
