Urban House residents complained about forced room sharing, no PPE, no sanitiser, 270 people sharing a few toilet facilities, poor food and no protection for people with severe health conditions inc children.
They protested bravely, including a hunger strike. Mears ignored them

Along with residents, we demanded an inspection of conditions at Urban House. After the inspection in early April Mears Group reported that Public Health Wakefield and the Home Office “gave approval for the way it is operating”.
Thanks to London Kurdish Community Centre and our wonderful volunteer team we're on our way to make another delivery of food, clothes and hygiene supplies to asylum residents at Urban House Initial Accommodation Centre in Wakefield

Last week, a man with diabetes went on a 7 day hunger strike and 40 people returned inadequate food to the canteen in protest.

Alongside Urban House residents we have documented the poor quality and unsuitable food there irr.org.uk/news/like-a-pr…. Pregnant women, young children, people with serious health conditions given 'meals' like these
When people bravely protested they were told the food would improve "in a few weeks' time". But the next day the people who protested were given this for their 'main meal'. As a punishment for daring to complain.
"If she doesn't like it she can leave".

‘Dora’ an Urban House resident was unwell with a cough and diarrhoea. On April 19 Mears tried to force someone unrelated to share her room - too small for social distancing. She complained and was told her request "will not be granted and if she doesn't like it she can leave"
