Last week, Census released 2021 data giving us our first look at the spatial distribution of the transition to working from home. A tale of two Americas emerges. Those who could adjust to work from home, and those who could not.
A quick deep viz dive into the data...🧵
#wfh
We see major #disparities in the share of the population that worked from home by race/ethnicity with White and Asian Americans able to WFH at much higher share than Black and Hispanic Americans regardless of city. Here a look at how WFH share varied across cities over 500k.
Some cities - DC and SF - had relatively high share of population WFH and also were relatively equitable. Other cities, like LA, Boston, and New York exhibit large disparities by race/ethnicity. This begs the question if income or accommodations are factors. Let's look at both.

The scholarly record has always comprised *more* than books & journals. Curiously, digital makes it harder for the *more* to join today's record & much is now missing. Librarians and scholars are worried. A long 🧵 (you might want to make ☕️ 🫖 first). #Fiesole2022

Good morning and welcome to the weekend! Day 13 of our collab with artist Greg Edwards (@GregtheGrouch) features Amanda Gorman, who at 22 is the youngest entry of this series. Her story demonstrates the empowerment that comes with having a voice & creative outlet.

#BHM #thread Image
Poet and activist Amanda Gorman was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1998. She grew up with a speech impediment and has an auditory condition making her hypersensitive to sound.

#HerStory
Facing these conditions, Amanda did not despair. Writing in 2018, she said,

“I always saw it as a strength because since I was experiencing these obstacles in terms of my auditory and vocal skills, I became really good at reading and writing."

Chandan Deuskar (@CD_planner) & I have co-authored a newly published paper on global #urbanization patterns and their implications for #planning in the Journal of Planning Education and Research (@JPER7). A thread on our findings and arguments. (1/10)

Our core questions: How are #urban populations distributed across settlement systems in rapidly urbanizing countries? How are those distributions changing? What does it mean for #urbanplanning? (2/10)
We use Global Human Settlements (GHS) data from @EU_Commission - a marked improvement on UN stats. Not only does GHS use harmonized definitions across countries, it's better for analyzing the size and growth of towns and small cities. (3/10) @DijkstraLewis ghsl.jrc.ec.europa.eu

I have spent the summer reading about how math & Big Data shape our understanding of the world. To my surprise, it has affirmed the importance of the humanities. Behind the shiny facade of #BigData lies a series of social judgments made by human beings.

A thread w/ citations.
The field of statistics is full of subjective judgments, such as p < .05 being the threshold for significance, or the selection of variables (@JSEllenberg). These are, as @mathbabedotorg puts it, “opinions embedded in models.” But we lose site of this in popular discourse. 2/9
The judgments made my mathematicians and data scientists are no more capital-T True than those made by activists, artists, journalists, etc. The difference is that mathematical judgments can be embedded in code — distilled to 1s and 0s — and scaled to infinity. @rushkoff 3/9

It is a new tool box. A way to apply new thinking to the problems of contemporary life. What are we DOING when we change something in a system like #energy #transport #housing or #food?

We are changing a system which makes us free. Free to cook, clean, move and shelter.
So it is never just #energy #energytransition work we are doing. We are not just trying to hit #netzero we are intervening in peoples lives and #capabilities

These freedoms are part of a contract between individuls, society and institutions.

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

My Copenhagen adventures have begun. @Fly_Norwegian left Seattle a bit late, mad dash to catch connecting flight at Gatwick. One more leg and I'm there. Hope that checked bag makes this plane too....
Obligatory pictures of just a few of the thousands of bicycles parked everywhere, ridden everywhere, in Copenhagen. And to end the the suspense yes, the checked bag made it despite the very tight connection at Gatwick. Whew.
A few bike images from Copenhagen: Golden statue of a lady on a bike atop a tower; bike shop sign that reads "hop on a bike/ feel like a local"; a mobile coffee stand that's a cargo bike; bike counter with a display of over 4 million trips.
