20 MARCH 2003 – OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM GROUND CAMPAIGN BEGINS - 20th ANNIVERSARY

The main thrust of the OIF ground assault burst forth from Kuwait, with the I MEF striking northwards while the U.S. Army’s V Corps swung northwest to towards the lower Euphrates Valley.
The 3rd ID led the charge, breaching an earthen berm on the border and blitzing about 90 miles northwards to seize the enemy airbase at Tallil by 22 MAR. 3rd ID elements secured critical Euphrates River crossings and reached As Samawah, 130 miles away from Kuwait.
By 23 MAR, the 101st ABD was conducting attack helicopter assaults which penetrated as far as Baghdad. Special Forces units attached to Task Force Viking and Task Force Dagger penetrated Iraq from the northeast and southwest during these early days of OIF. #Armyhistory #USArmy

#USNavy #USAF #avgeeks #aviationlovers - NATF-22? Yes, there could have been a navalized F-22 stealth a la F-14 Tomcat with swing wings, Mach 2.25 supercruise, heavier landing gear, and so much more. So why did the US Navy opt for the F-18 and F-35 instead? I'll tell you... 1/ Image
2/ Congress wanted the NATF-22 but the US Navy pushed back. The swing wings would have compromised stealth and added to the maintenance woes. As it was, the F-14 was already far too expensive especially in the absence of the #USSR's military, which is why the F-14 was retired. Image
3/ The naval F-22, aka Sea Raptor, would have been slower than the F-14 and cost more. The F-22's unit cost was, ballpark, $138 million. A navalized one surely would have cost at least 20% more based on F-14 vs F-15 costs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_… Image

For My #USMC friends on here. I give you shit, but I know this a very sacred time of year for you, so I wrote this: T'was the Night before Founding....
Twas the night before Founding, when all thro' the Palms,
Not a leatherneck was stirring, not even for psalms;
The Boots were hung by the Barracks with care,
In hopes that St. Chesty soon would be there;
The privates were nestled all snug in their racks,
While visions of crayons danc'd just like snacks,
And Gunny in his brown round, and I in my cap,
Had just settled in for a long duty watch nap-

🧵In a lot of American histories of #WWI campaigns, we hear of complaints that the French moved too slowly, causing undue casualties. A prime case study of that is the 1st and 2nd Division at Soissons. A recent history stated of the 19 July attack of the 6th Marines that;... Image
"The final hindrance for the 6th Marines was perhaps the most important. Once again, the 1st Moroccan Division, tasked with the mission of protecting the Marines’ left flank, failed to advance, as did the 38th Division on the right.
This combination of dire news meant that the #USMC and French tankers were attacking without coordinated artillery or air support, or support on either flank; moving across open wheat fields with little or no cover..."

For anyone wondering about the recent hubbub on Force Design in the #USMC from retired Marines—esp. the implication that the #Marines are throwing away decades-old tried-&-true equipment & methods—read chapters 2 & 3 of my book, “A New Conception of War:”

usmcu.edu/Portals/218/AN… Image
There is no “decades old tried-and-true” Marine Corps organization b/c the Corps has adapted its mission, organization, and equipment often throughout its history. The 20th century alone saw several changes in the Corps’ structure and mission. Pre-WWI: ship’s landing party &
Low intensity conflict constabulary force. WWI: second land army. WWII: amphibious forcible entry as part of a wider naval campaign in the Pacific. Korea: amphibious assault, and then land army. Post-Korea: force in readiness. Vietnam: counterinsurgency.

Okay this will be a longer post, but wanted to take a moment to break something down for those that might not get it.

Years ago I joined the USMC and we were brought to base in the middle of the night. The shouting began and we flew off that bus onto the yellow footprints. 👇
5 minutes later we had no hair, no memory of hair, and could not remember how we got here. They took everything from us and gave us all the same equipment. Threw it actually. We spent the night in receiving, our bald heads on the pillow of our new life. 👇
The Drill Instructors would yell, get in our faces, and treat us lower than dirt. The Senior DI was like our big brother, he would reward you when you did good and have the assholes bend you when you messed up. Man we hated those guys.

My Dad, Felix, proudly served the US as a RECON Marine. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune in the 1960s during a water contamination that resulted in lymphoma later in life. This is a travesty that has impacted 1000s and that the US govt acknowledges. He died over Christmas (1/7)
in the exceptional #VA hospital of southwest Virginia. He had contracted #COVID and it had damaged his lungs to the point where he could not breathe or survive without 60L of high flow O2. His doctors and nurses were remarkable on all levels. He was vaccinated, but (2/7)
his lymphoma made his B cells unable to generate antibodies. His VA doctor explained how she had many men with my Dad’s lymphoma that could not make antibodies and had an unusually poor prognosis with COVID even with monoclonal antibody treatment— just not getting better. (3/7)

Wake Island - Pacific Theater 1941
An 80th-anniversary social media experience from the #USMCMuseum.
West of the int’l dateline on 8 Dec 1941, Japanese bombs were falling on three US bases across the Pacific Ocean. Guam would be the first American territory to fall to the Japanese on 10 December. The defenders of Wake Island, however, would hold out for another 2 weeks.
Wake had become a US possession in 1899 and was strategically located halfway between Honolulu and Manila. By 1936, it had become a stopover point for Pan Am airlines’ flying boat Clipper service. However, it was not until 1941 that the Navy began defensive improvements.

For the first time ever, the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels debut a F-16 Fighting Falcon and F/A-18 Super Hornet flight formation known as the “Super Delta” during a joint training evolution this afternoon over the Imperial Valley.
The formation grew out of a series of joint training opportunities held in 2020 and 2021, and serves as a symbol of the teamwork, discipline, and skill of the men and women of our United States military forces deployed around the globe.
We are humbled to have the opportunity to virtually debut a full flight this Memorial Day weekend during the nation-wide broadcast of the National Memorial Day Parade:

Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) was an attempt to do something truly remarkable and failed horribly. But always a cracker to revisit and look at what was almost achieved when someone left the USMC unattended and they dared to dream #miltwitter #tanktwitter #usmc #EFV
EFV has a long and confused history under several earlier guises including the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) but in essence from the 1970s had been seeking to find a modern high speed replacement for the venerable AAV-7A1 family of amphibious assault vehicles
The original requirements were, in honesty, just mad. 3 crew & 17(!) dismounts, 30mm stabilised turret, water speed of >25kts and a range of 400km (though notional mission was 46km swim over the horizon). On land, peer mobility to an M1A1 and 550 km range with high survivability

Image

"For Over 221 Years Our Corps Has Done Two Things For This Great Nation. We Make Marines And We Win Battles."

~ General Charles C. Krulak, 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps #USMC #SemperFidelis #Marines
Gen Krulak devised the concept of the “Three Block War” to to describe the challenges likely to be faced by Marines on modern battlefields. Marines may be required to conduct full scale military action, peacekeeping & humanitarian aid within the space of 3 contiguous city blocks.
General Krulak is the son of LtGen Victor H. Krulak, nicknamed “Brute”.

On days like today not even 5 yrs of faithful & honorable active duty #Service in #USMC can convince some ppl of a Muslims loyalty to USA.1/
Ppl ask me why I enlisted in the #Marines in 1997 at the age of 19. I tell them b/c loyalty to my nation of residence is part of my faith./2
I served the US faithfully BECAUSE of my faith, not in spite of it. I had the full support of my father — a Muslim Imam & my family. /3
