Read the midterm evaluations for my GWS 101 large lecture course. A little over 1/3 of the students filled out the evaluation online. Average rating of 4.5 out of 5. Vast majority of the comments positive. Best one: “Basically this course makes you a better human.” 🙃
I’ve been struggling with the fact that I put SO MUCH TIME into this class but I am very disconnected from the students & their learning experience since I only lecture while TAs lead discussions & grade. Sometimes it feels like shouting into the abyss & hoping someone heard.
These evals help remind me students are indeed learning & benefitting from the class, even though I don’t really get to see it. A nice gift as we push through the last five weeks of the hardest/busiest semester I’ve had in years.
Hey #MadisonWI & anti-racist friends, please be aware of what's happening in Madison with @OvertureCenter's production of Miss Saigon. Originally Overture agreed to host a panel by Asian American Studies scholars on the representations of #AsianAmericans in the show.
Now, the day of the panel, @OvertureCenter has cancelled the panel entirely. Apparently leading up to this Overture staff did not up hold promises, refused to print the program note by Dr. Timothy Yu, and ultimately cancelled the entire panel.
The actions of Overture make several things clear. First the #racism in Madison is not limited to anti-black racism & we need to support our Asian and Asian American community members.
So fucking over the moon to have met & introduce @MeTooMVMT founder @TaranaBurke tonight for her @WUD_DLS lecture at @UWMadison. My voice broke as I read my intro bc of how powerful & important Ms. Burke’s work is to me & the world. 
Tonight Ms. Burke told us about her origins working with black girl survivors. She reminded us that the work has ALWAYS about survivors, healing & ending sexual violence NOT merely about “bringing down powerful men”
Her talk was moving. She encouraged all @UWMadison students to claim this space. She said this is YOUR campus. You DESERVE to be safe here & free from sexual & racial violence. Until we are all safe here the university is not living up to its mission.
Angela Davis is coming to @UWMadison for the @WUD_DLS in April. What do I have to do to get invited to a meal with her?! Twitter, tell them I’m clearly the faculty member for the job. I’m a black queer feminist activist academic. Davis is one of my heroes! Pick me!!!
