Few of us have seen an iron lung, let alone required one to live. This weekend I stumbled upon one at a surprising location: the wonderful art and history museum, .@MuseumLondon in Ontario. It was donated by .@LHSCCanada to remind the public of the scourge of polio.
@MuseumLondon @LHSCCanada Many different artificial respirators were built and marketed worldwide in the early-to-mid 20th century but the very first was the Drinker Respirator, named for Philip Drinker, an assistant professor of industrial hygiene at .@HarvardChanSPH in 1928.
@MuseumLondon @LHSCCanada @HarvardChanSPH Drinker had a background in chemical engineering and was faculty in the Department of Ventilation and Illumination. His published research prior to 1928 tended to focus on industrial pollution, temperature control, etc. Important stuff but pretty far afield from poliomyelitis.

Friendly reminder: Herd immunity is LOVE!! 🐃♥️

I created some merch that will hopefully encourage people who can receive vaccinations to get them.…

Herd immunity protects entire communities by reducing the chances of being infected, especially for people who are immunocompromised and others who cannot take them.

I got my flu shot a few weeks ago because I get sick, I get SICK. For weeks, not to mention the time to regain strength & recover. As a disabled person, when a flu, bronchitis, or pneumonia can be deadly for me as well as millions of other chronically ill & older people.

WHO welcomes @Pinterest’s leadership in protecting public health by only providing evidence-based information about vaccines to its users.
We hope to see other social media platforms around the world following Pinterest's lead

@Pinterest @pahowho @WHO_Europe @WHOSEARO @WHOAFRO @WHOWPRO @WHOEMRO Misinformation about vaccines is as contagious and dangerous as the diseases it helps to spread.

Misinformation about vaccination has spread far and fast on social media platforms in many different countries, including during critical vaccination campaigns

@Pinterest @pahowho @WHO_Europe @WHOSEARO @WHOAFRO @WHOWPRO @WHOEMRO @DrTedros The truth is, #VaccinesWork.
Smallpox has been eradicated thanks to vaccines, and vaccines have brought us to the brink of eradicating polio. Rates of many other diseases including measles have been dramatically reduced thanks to the life-saving power of vaccines.

@JNTHN_LCKWD Yes liability. Yes accountability.

The NCVIA was created as a means to give people who have rare serious reactions from vaccines a quicker, easier & cheaper way to get compensated rather than be forced into expensive, lengthy & impossible to win civil trials.
@JNTHN_LCKWD Of course anyone can still file a lawsuit if they would like.
@JNTHN_LCKWD Interesting to note that while compensated cases show true serious reactions to vaccines are one in a million, 50% of those compensated since 2017 weren't even for vaccine injuries but from shoulder injuries due to improper placement of the syringe.…

🚨 #Measles outbreaks continue to spread rapidly around the 🌎🌍🌏:

Reported cases are almost 3 times higher than they were at this same time last year.
@WHO_Europe @pahowho @WHOEMRO @WHOSEARO @WHOAFRO @WHOWPRO @DrTedros @UN_News_Centre The first six months of 2019 have already seen the highest number of #measles cases reported since 2006, straining health care systems, and leading to serious illness, disability, and deaths in many parts of the world.
@WHO_Europe @pahowho @WHOEMRO @WHOSEARO @WHOAFRO @WHOWPRO @DrTedros @UN_News_Centre 🇨🇩, 🇲🇬 and 🇺🇦 have recorded the highest numbers of #measles cases this year.

35 countries have reported more than 1000 cases for 2019 to date.

Preventing Measles among Immunosuppressed Cancer & HCT Recipients…
Immunosuppressed pts are at higher risk for #measles complications - like encephalitis & pneumonia - but rely on herd immunity for protection. Many cannot get live virus vaccines like #MMR, or if previously vaccinated, have weakened immune systems put them at high risk 2/6
This paper gives a summary of what we know about measles in cancer (it isn't pretty), and what we can do to best protect our patients. It also gives guidance for when one might consider early vaccination for some of these high-risk pts. 3/6 #measles #vaccination

Warum so viele Geimpfte an Masern erkranken.

More than 1 in 10 children worldwide missed out on lifesaving #vaccines such as #measles, #diphtheria and #tetanus in 2018: New data from WHO/@UNICEF…
Globally, since 2010, vaccination coverage with 3 doses of #diphtheria, #tetanus & #pertussis and the first dose of the #measles vaccine has stalled at around 86% - not sufficient as 95% coverage globally is needed to protect against outbreaks of #vaccine-preventable diseases
Most unvaccinated children live in the poorest countries and are disproportionately in fragile or conflict-affected states.
Almost half are in just 16 countries:

@HighWireTalk Actual survey results:
"Despite these concerns, 82% of respondents were still generally in favor of vaccines, while 8% showed serious doubts, and 9% said they were unsure."
@HighWireTalk The survey identified genuine problem. Which is that parents get bombarded with lies on social media.
Luckily most of them see them for the lies they are.
Some have questions...
I'm all for questions!
@HighWireTalk But I am also hugely against the idea that you can lie about vaccines on social media with zero come-back.
I don't think that should be allowed. Because it leads to hesitancy, lack of vaccination and then outbreaks and disease and death.

Something I’ve thought of posting for awhile:

My personal manifesto on vaccines in the context of measles outbreaks and as an Epi PhD student with a small child under the age of 1.

A thread.

Grab some popcorn and settle in.

#Parenthood #StudentParent #EpiTwitter
A bit of background: We have family and many friends who live on #VashonIsland (known for having low rates of immunization).

My undergraduate thesis looked at school rates of vaccines on Vashon and found no #herdimmunity for ANY vaccine preventable disease in 2012.
Vashon is an evil genius’ dream for an outbreak.

There are 2 grocery stores, where everyone shops.

The schools share facilities, have student mentor exchanges, etc.

There are regular student trips to the 1 senior center.

Did I mention it’s an island?

It's dry tinder.

Fun vax fact: ICUs did not exist before the polio epidemics. Mechanical ventilation became widespread in the 1950s due to increase in polio cases. The virus causes paralysis of the muscles that control swallowing & breathing in <1% of patients or 13-20k paralytic cases/yr and
300-1000 deaths/yr in US. Salk's inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) became available in 1955 and changed the world. People waited in line for hours. The oral polio (OPV) @sabinvaccine came out in '61. By 1965, there were only 61 paralytic cases. It was eliminated from the US in '79
In 2018, there were 33 cases of polio worldwide. Wherever vaccines go, the disease vanishes. When vaccination decreases, due to warfare or antivaccine beliefs, the disease recurs like it did in Nigeria after WHO vaccine workers were kicked out of the country. Antivax harms kids.

Refrigeration at the doctor’s office is moot if #vaccines have already sat out for 2 days to be labeled and packaged.…
“In their efforts to improve the cold chain, pharmaceutical manufacturers have largely focused on storage and shipment. However, there’s a period during the packaging process when vaccines are routinely out of the cold chain for up to 2 days.”
If it is true that #vaccines are routinely left at room temperature for up to 48 hours before they even leave the manufacturing facility, they should be destroyed on the spot. They should NEVER be injected into a human.

Let’s talk #VaccineLiability. There’s a vaccine court that has a lower evidentiary bar than any civil court in the US. If a plaintiff fails there, he can STILL sue in civil court afterward. Our system does protect families. #VaccinesSaveLives
Let’s talk #VAERS. It’s an important database in which anyone can voluntarily report any effect of a vaccine: injection site soreness,fever,fussiness,redness. I’ve reported. So when #ProPlague #Antivaxxers quote numbers, just ask for the breakdown of VAERs reports.#VaccinesWork
The #VAERS system helps monitor concerning symptoms that could start to appear (eg, ⬆️’d soreness or fever with a specific batch of vaccines). It helped identify concerns w/rotavirus so it could undergo rigorous safety testing. It’s a great 1st step in safety.#VaccineMonitoring

@LBC @MaajidNawaz There is a genuine issue that people encounter when trying to read about vaccines online. The World Health Organization and the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety have said that:
@LBC @MaajidNawaz "Due to the success of immunization, some diseases are no longer perceived as a threat. Certain groups have even questioned the utility of vaccination in spite of its proven success in controlling disease."

I think I have been defeated by measles. Not the virus--I got a booster, and I know #vaccineswork.

But if we can't make inroads into the nonsense network, even with all the #scicomm pros having studied this, had panels, we have the data... We're just fucked at this point.
There's not a chance we are gonna be able to explain to people the details of this hot garbage new paper on glyphosate and 3rd generation rodents. Not a chance. Nobody will hear it. The nonsense network is already screeching it.
I'm sure there's a legal team lined up on it too. But the larger problem is this: we have no tools to stop the nonsense. I know you want to coddle all the hesistant parents. Fine. But they are hesitant because they have been filled with nonsense.

“...highly contagious virus that lives in the nose and throat mucus of an infected person...can spread to others through coughing and for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed.”…
