Do you eat meat or other animal products?
Should you?

Last month, I defended my PhD thesis about perceptions of vegetarians and vegans (short: veg*ns) in promoting #plantbased diets.

Why did I pursue this topic and what did I discover?
Find out in this #ThesisThread.

1/20
Why this topic? The widespread consumption of animal products🥓🥛🍳causes a lot of harm:
🐖billions of animals suffer & die each year
🌍it damages planetary health
💙threatens public health
📽️tinyurl.com/et4f5jf4

👨‍🔬To reduce these harms, we can adopt #plantbased diets

2/20
Nevertheless...

📢Calls for change by those who do not eat meat #vegetarians or other animal products #vegans are often challenged by the majority of people who continue to eat meat #omnivores.

❓How can veg*ns attract more omnivores and promote #plantbased diets?

[#Biodynamie et #Véganisme]

⚠️ A RT ⚠️

1/n Am I happy to have been completely exonerated by a 7-month investigation into complaints made against me and the former Vice Chair? And that @TheVeganSociety has issued a public statement to that effect (i.e. vegansociety.com/investigation-…)?

Far from it...
#vegan #vegans #veganism
2/n While @TheVeganSociety proudly tweeted that it had "joined the @CharityAgstHate initiative to challenge posts that incite hate... on #SocialMedia", it took no meaningful action when a disabled Black non-binary trustee was targeted on account of such protected characteristics.
3/n What was this if not a coordinated campaign of racist, transphobic, and ableist bullying against the @TheVeganSociety's youngest voluntary trustee, but which the society (a certain section of Council, in particular) seems willing to ignore?

A dérouler.
A RT.
Poke @KartapussFR

Does new study mean #vegans have weak bones? No❌
Does study mean you need meat for healthy bones? No❌

A #thread on #new study:
Vegetarian & vegan diets & risks of total & site-specific fractures: results from the prospective EPIC-Oxford study
bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
Main Finding:
Data showed 15 more cases of hip fracture in vegans vs meat eaters per 1000 ppl over a 10 year period

⚠️Consider: All enrolled in the study between 1993-2001, last diet assessment 2010
Why it matters:
1. Much #lower knowledge about veganism 10-15-20 y ago vs today
2. Less awareness re protein, RT/muscle & bone health
3. #PlantBased protein options uncommon in marketplace

Reasons for increased fractures in vegans, *important statement: "Fractures at some sites, especially at the hip, may also be more related to osteoporosis than fractures

Let’s take a moment to remember the #suffragists who were #vegetarian, a thread. They recognized how oppressions were connected. Some of the information is from my book, The Sexual Politics of Meat now celebrating its 30th anniversary of publication. #suffrage /1
Let’s be clear: Susan B. #Anthony was NOT a vegetarian. She was happy to get to Delmonico’s in Manhattan after staying with the #Grimke sisters, who were. She did attend a vegetarian banquet in 1853, where the toast was to “Total Abstinence, Women’s Rights, & Vegetarianism.” /2
Matilda Joslyn #Gage, a radical activist & co-editor of the 1st 3 volumes of “The History of Woman Suffrage” with Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony, was a vegetarian. She was later written out of the history for her radical views. See the work of @Swagner711 /3

For reasons I'm sure made sense at the time, I started sending a coworker random fungus facts every workday morning just as a random interesting thing while we're all self-isolating. Since a few folks on twitter also expressed an interest, I'm going to tweet a few also! 🍄
Disclaimer: although I studied mycology and have an M.Sc in plant pathology, that was a long time ago and I no longer work in the field, so if I contradict a current expert I'm probably wrong. Also, feel free to mute this thread if you hate fungi! 😛
First of all, what are fungi? You may think mushrooms are fungi, and kind of true - in fact, mushrooms are the reproductive body of some (not all) types of fungi, kind of like fruit are the way trees distribute seeds. Many fungi do not make mushrooms.

This is a second thread for #white #vegans & #animalrights activists who recognize we are often the problem in the way we articulate issues having to do with the other animals. What if white privilege has influenced the way we have framed issues around veganism and animal rights?
This is a part of journal entry from the early 1980s when I was involved in a very difficult battle around integrated housing and racism. I wrote “Racists who do not see that they are being racist. If this is true as a paradigm—racists do not see racism... Image
...what is there about me that is racist but I fail to see it?"
I tried to learn a methodology for confronting that racism that goes unacknowledged: Assume your own ignorance & if you have received feedback that something you said or did or endorsed was racist—hear the critique.

This thread is for #white #vegans & #animalrights activists who recognize we are often the problem in the way we articulate issues having to do with the other animals. One step is to learn as much as you can about #WhiteSupremacy & #WhitePrivilege. Read! #BlackHistoryMonth2020
Do you know the history of the Civil Rights movement? You could start by reading vol 1 of "America in the King Years," "Parting the Waters" by @taylorbranch. simonandschuster.com/books/Parting-…
@taylorbranch In 1962, the Civil Rights Commission was going to make a very strong statement about racism. Politically, it would be problematic for President Kennedy. JFK was told "It is legal for the police to use dogs." So, turn to "Afro-Dog" next. cup.columbia.edu/book/afro-dog/…

Hi #vegans, I will not give you concessions until you deal with the white-supremacists and racists in your midst.

The white supremacist vegans believe that my worth is not equal to that of a cow but that the cow has more value because I am not white.
BTW, Eco-fascists who are all white nationalists are also mostly vegans: newstatesman.com/science-tech/s…

Something I think about a lot is how #veganism interacts with privilege. Veganism for wealthy, white Americans is very different from veganism for other demographics. When communicating your activism, this is such an important aspect to consider regarding your audience.
When you’re poor, yes rice and beans are cheap but that gets exhausting after a while. For many in rural areas, finding options is very limited. It’s an extra weight removing yourself from already small social circles.
I don’t think this justifies killing animals for consumption, but it’s a different narrative from somebody with a reasonable salary in a populated city.
