#India isn't the #vegetarian model some claim it to be. Watch this excellent summary by @sakie339 to understand why:

Staggering statistics of malnourishment in children & women, reinforced by an aggressive criminalization of valuable foods by ideologists.
"Nutritional indicators/social security schemes were a cause for concern even before the pandemic, which the pandemic has aggravated. With the large number of Covid cases in India, we need to ask if a better nourished population would have handled the pandemic better"

From the same document, a case study: Kellogg's fake meat burger. Claiming that plant-based is "better for people and planet" and that the main barrier is prejudice because people think it "will not taste as good" ???
Nah, reason why most don't want this stuff is probably because the ingredients look like this. I don't see a lot of "plants" here that could be "good for people & planet"? Any plants at all? Only extracts & additives.

And I doubt that this is a good basis for tasting like beef.

Let’s take a moment to remember the #suffragists who were #vegetarian, a thread. They recognized how oppressions were connected. Some of the information is from my book, The Sexual Politics of Meat now celebrating its 30th anniversary of publication. #suffrage /1
Let’s be clear: Susan B. #Anthony was NOT a vegetarian. She was happy to get to Delmonico’s in Manhattan after staying with the #Grimke sisters, who were. She did attend a vegetarian banquet in 1853, where the toast was to “Total Abstinence, Women’s Rights, & Vegetarianism.” /2
Matilda Joslyn #Gage, a radical activist & co-editor of the 1st 3 volumes of “The History of Woman Suffrage” with Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony, was a vegetarian. She was later written out of the history for her radical views. See the work of @Swagner711 /3

Healthy diet is a key to the happy life.

When the whole world is battling with Corona, it is even more imp to look at the ways in which we can improve our immunity & avoid spread of such pandemics.

A #thread below to highlight benefits of a meat free life👇

#healthylifestyle
1. Reduce Risk of Heart Disease

Vegetarian diet is,
👉lower in saturated fat & cholesterol
👉higher in plant nutrients
Which reduce heart diseases.

A low fat diet is the single most effective way to stop the progression of coronary artery disease or prevent it entirely.
2. Cancer Prevention

🦀~70% of all diseases, including one third of all cancers, are related to diet

Meat,
👉is devoid of fiber & nutrients that have a protective effect
👉 has carcinogenic compounds such as HCA & PAH that increase cancer risk

One for the vegetarians tonight - Mushroom & Hazelnut Carbonara. This is a really quick dish to make, and it looks pretty special too. #coronacooking #vegetarian
Ingredients:
300g mushrooms
2 cloves of garlic
2 tbsp chopped fresh thyme
1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary
80ml white wine
250ml vegetable stock
50g hazelnuts, roasted, skinned & halved
80g butter
40g grated fresh parmesan
4 egg yolks
400g dried spaghetti
Bring a large pot of water to the boil. Add a good bit of salt. The water needs to be really hot, with a good bubbling boil, so don’t add the paste before it gets to that point. If you do, the pasta won’t cook properly and will likely end up sticky and a bit tasteless.

What's our #beef with beef?

Public interest on #climate, #biodiversity & #diet is rightly growing

#Meat is often at the heart of the debate but it's important we look past headlines & unpick the detail

THREAD 👇

#EatBetterMeat #EatOrganic #BBCOne 👉ow.ly/MjQ150xjJI9
Our #meat comes from different #farm systems

When animals are grazed on grass, as in #organic, this can have positive impacts on #climate & #nature. Intensively produced #grain-fed chicken & pigs can have the opposite effect

#EatBetterMeat #EatOrganic 👉ow.ly/MjQ150xjJI9
🐄🐖🐔 Intensively farmed animals are almost always fed on #grain & imported #soya

The production of animal feed can exhaust soils and drive #rainforest clearance

This is devastating for the #climate & #biodiversity

Flying back home today after my first ever trip to #SriLanka... Travelled with wifey @historywali

Lots of stuff to pen down about the trip, follow this thread..
Landing in Colombo, it's super easy to get a local SIM card and cheap (INR 750 roughly for my entire 10 days). Something for @incredibleindia to emulate? And Uber works from the airport to Negombo/Colombo (I learned this on the return), 50% cheaper than airport taxis
We rented a motorcycle to travel! Our bike, a simple 250cc Honda from (negombo-motorcycle-tours.com) @ $18 a day + $40 for the local driving permit.

Was super easy to rent as we had prebooked. We picked up the bike and were on our way within an hour.

THREAD: I’m a scientist and I gained 1K TWITTER FOLLOWERS in FIVE WEEKS. Here’s how I did it. #medtwitter #epitwitter #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #phdchat
1. I changed my mindset about Twitter. When I first started my account, I thought of it as a personal platform where people yell at each other (true). But it’s more than that. It’s a PROFESSIONAL NETWORKING tool. Use it to find your tribe. I’m looking at you #epitwitter.
2. I made my profile searchable and memorable. Does your bio describe you or does it sound like a canned bio on your employer’s website (or worse: a dating site)? Describe your profession. Add some dimension like #vegetarian #endocrinologist. Give people a reason to follow you.

A little note about the #LessAndBetter meat message - I'm quite well known for calling this out as unhelpful and actually harmful to developing more sustainable farming systems, but it's not *just* because I sell meat, although that has given me an insight into the effect of such
a destructive message. The problem stems mainly from the vague nature of the message - less than what? better than what? what is better? what is 'meat'?- it's not at all clear, if you take greenhouse gas emissions, for example, cows emit methane so they must be bad, right, so
let's eat chicken instead? But hang on, chicken is the most intensively reared meat available, so how can that be 'better'? Well, maybe we first need to work out what we mean by 'meat' and how things have changed. According to FAO Stat, in the half century to the UK has changed

In this article, we express our critical position towards using #CRISPR to engineer #pigs so that do not reach puberty. #Livestock farming should be designed with animal sentience at its core, we should not modify #animals to fit inhumane systems. allianceforscience.cornell.edu/blog/2019/07/a…
One aspect that the article does not mention and that we clearly indicated as being problematic is animal suffering during #experiments involving #CRISPR: painful #malformations, #abortions, are common "side effects" of such experiments.
Our original statement said "#CRISPR has a high potential for causing severe #animal #suffering during the research phases (such as abortions, perinatal mortality, malformations)
