4 days since I was diagnosed with a kidney stone stuck in my ureter and I have experienced such a wide range of responses from health professionals. In many ways I wish a vet was in charge of my care. A thread:
1/ turned up at a&e on Sunday morning in agonising pain which started at 6:30am. The triage nurse I saw told me “you can stop crying now” and walked off leaving me without pain relief. Eventually after begging I received a small dose of oral codeine…
2/ proceeded to spend the next 3-4 hours crying and unable to sit still in the waiting room due to renal colic I eventually saw a lovely doctor who thought it was unlikely I had a stone on account of me being a 24yo female, but 10 minutes later when the next wave of uncontrolled

Soo, the Idaho white supremacists...
I can't tell you the # times I've been invited to #VetMed things in Coeur d'Alene.

I always say no. Never been, no plans to go. I hear they are both gorgeous. I also hear that they are unsafe for folks like me.
Black woman, mom to a queer person. Nope not going to Idaho, tho I'm sure there are also lovely people there. A former dean discouraged stopping anywhere when I had to drive thru one time; that spoke volumes!

It's the no for me.
So then I wondered, why is there such a connection to this place (& a few others) in #VetMed?

Who made those decision & how long ago? Who's reviewing them now?

Ok, #VetMedEd...I want to talk about flipping mental frameworks for a minute.

As groups are developing recommendations for DEI in vet school, please spend some time thinking about the framework you're starting from.
I'm seeing a lot of, "We need to *teach/prep* BIPOC & marginalized identities to survive here, etc."

BAD TAKE. If I need to learn how to survive here, that is a a bad environment for everyone. Stop thinking that the CVM/Org doesn't need to change when it does.
In fact, I'll go so far as to say this framework is offensive.

It puts *all* responsibility for change on the marginalized. It's basically an announcement that you expect marginalized folks to assimilate. #hardpass

My neighbour thinks I am mean to my dogs because I won’t let them chew on bones. But here’s the thing: I spend most of my mornings doing dentistry on dogs and cats, and I’d like to share what I see all too often.

A #VetMed Thread. TW: Surgical/Dental descriptions and images
Teeth are an amazing example of evolution. You can tell so much about an animal’s diet (or more accurately about the diet of their ancestors) from their teeth. Dogs teeth are mostly about grabbing, piercing and slicing.
And dogs do love bones. They are tasty, and fun to chew on, and when all is going well, they do a pretty good job at keeping those nice big teeth clean.

I'm so glad that so many veterinary orgs are working on DEI initiatives. That said, I want to give some advice for folx looking for referrals for help.
Be ready to COMPENSATE DEI folx.

DEI *professionals* are skilled ppl w/ degrees, credentials, research portfolios, & packed schedules. Create a budget larger than a fruit basket. Pay folx for their skills & labor. Don't expect free labor!
Be ready to WORK!

DEI professionals are in high demand these days. When I reach out about a possible referral, my colleagues ask abt the org's commitment. Performative work ain't it. They WILL SAY NO to those 'opportunities.'

So, about the @VINNewsService profile...

I've demurred invites to do a profile for many years. Despite being so visible in the veterinary profession, I've eschewed much personal attention. I focus on the work & let that speak for me & for the DEI progress that's been made.
The reality is that there are soooo very many folks who have been along for this ride (which at times has been bumpy, to say the least). Deans, Associate Deans, staff, students (who honestly have done so much heavy lifting all while studying) interdisciplinary colleagues...
There are just too many to list, but know that I'm eternally grateful for your mentorship, your friendship, your collegiality, your teaching, your support, your shared venting & frustration that things haven't changed more radically or more quickly.

@RoryTheVet Thanks for bringing this to the worlds attention. I get so scared everytime I see a friend or colleague post that they are struggling. I know how easy it is to slip under the comfortable cloak of depression.
@RoryTheVet I really hope the profession is changing but I’m yet to see much evidence from the people in charge that create the company culture environment. I’m so thankful I finally found a company that aren’t just nice to work for but that actively look after me.
@RoryTheVet They tell us all to stop working and go home or shut our laptops. Give us time off when they know we need it but maybe haven’t realised ourselves. Telling vets to practice mindfulness, exercise and eat well is just pushing the responsibly onto the individual. If you manage a team

A thread on #vetmed recruiting BIPOC students in the K-12 space.

In recent weeks I'm hearing so much excitement & energy around the long game of recruiting BIPOC students into vet med. I know many of us have dancing images of exposing littles to animals & animal docs.
I'm soooo supportive of this, but hear me clearly that these efforts already have HUGE blind spots that must be addressed if we want these efforts to even have a chance.
1) Stop assuming Black & brown kids don't also have a "calling" to be a veterinarian like so many of our applicants. Stop assuming that lack of exposure is the why our kids don't want to be vets. Recognize that there are systemic biases that reroute interested kids. #itsamyth
