Learning about structured literacy for adolescents with @focusonliteracy - this feels so important I want to share #vted šŸ§µ
There is a link between behavior issues and literacy, as Sherry Sousa says "better to be the bad kid than the kid that can't read"
Our literacy numbers for graduates across this country are problematic - but they don't reflect student dignity and agency

No press briefing today (1/4/22), but there was a new modeling report. You can see all 60 slides, as always, on the DFR website. Hereā€™s the link to todayā€™s report: dfr.vermont.gov/sites/finreg/fā€¦

Iā€™ll share a few slides that stuck out to me in a šŸ§µ. Hereā€™s the overall summary.
Cases are up, a lot. And the forecast is for a lot more.
Although the case rate is increasing at a higher level for vaccinated individuals, those who are unvaccinated are still much more likely to have serious complications or death.

Okay, Tuesday press briefing any moment now. Tune to @vprnet to hear analysis up until it starts and afterwards. And here's a thread for those who don't want to sit and listen for 2 hours! #vtpoli #vted #covid19vt
@vprnet A few asides. I got a COVID test last Thursday afternoon (I had attended a family funeral in Maine--masked indoors but unmasked for the outdoor reception, so I wanted to be on the safe side). Results came back on Saturday morning. Anyone still struggling to get timely results?
And I just got this note from my kidsā€™ elementary school. Now very much hoping to hear more this hour. #vted

1/ Yesterday, the Chair of VTā€™s State Board of Ed attended a local school board meeting. He introduced himself as ā€œnot a residentā€ (a second home owner) & advocated for sending private school vouchers to programs that are allowed to pick and choose who they enroll. #vted
2/ The occasion? A Barstow School Board meeting to discuss whether or not to propose voucher-funded students to attend three nearby public high schools, as provided for in statute, so that tax dollars support schools that donā€™t exclude some children.

3/The State Board is the regulatory board for #vtedā€™s system of public education. This cameo by the chair in Barstow is interesting: the chair of the board that oversees public school districts came to say ā€˜donā€™t spend your money just on public schools..

1/ šŸ§µ: While #vted is coping with lack of state leadership on #Delta mitigation, the new state board is again eroding inclusion.
The debate over how & whether taxpayer funded private schools should serve students w/ disabilities is a good case study in regulatory capture. TY @AARosenbergUCS for the image of the fox in the henhouse
2/ Weā€™ve read in the news about taxpayer-funded private schools & childcares that exclude students based on religion, gender, etc.. A longer term debate has centered on whether taxpayer funded private schools in VT must serve students with disabilities.

3/ The VT Board of Ed. just proposed new rules for private schools that receive tuition vouchers, as part of delayed implementation of a law that says schools that receive vouchers shall enroll students w/ disabilities who are ā€œplacedā€ there. The board: vtdigger.org/2021/03/17/witā€¦

Governor Scott's weekly press conference about to start. Vermont kids are headed back to school this week, and the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine just got standard FDA approval. We'll see what the assembled panel has to say. #vted #yourshotvt #covid19 #vtpoli Here's your thread!
Scott says the White House told governors today that clinical trials for vaccines in kids under the age of 12 are going well and Pfizer should be submitting data for emergency approval in September. However...
...this morning on NPR, NIH director Francis Collins said he didn't think the vaccine would be available for kids before the end of the year. npr.org/2021/08/24/103ā€¦

Anyone want some live tweets of @GovPhilScott's inaugural address? #vtpoli He's starting now, and immediately opens with the "shocking attack on our democracy" yesterday in Washington. "Make no mistake, Donald Trump is responsible for fanning these flames."
Scott says the challenges we face demand the very best of all of us, and notes that all of this as happening during a global pandemic. He pivots now to when we first began to learn about this virus spreading around the world.
Says he left his seat at a Norwich hockey game the moment he heard of he first case in the state, "and never looked back." Declared a State of Emergency less than a week later.

A barrage of press conference tweets headed your way. Today we're going to get the regular Friday modeling report, which includes data on college testing over the past few weeks. And we'll hear from state epidemiologist Patsy Kelso. #vtpoli #vted #covid19
Governor Scott kicks things off. Missed the first few seconds of the presser, but as we're coming into the audio, Scott's imploring Vermonters to take a few minutes this Labor Day weekend and fill out your census forms. If you don't have a form, go to my2020census.gov
He also asks VTers to "stay smart and stay safe" this holiday weekend. Have fun, he says, but please continue to follow health dept. guidance. "Don't travel to areas that have high case counts." Schools really pushing this message as well, hoping for a successful start on Tues.

Iā€™ve been thinking a lot about @DrIbramā€™s words, spoken at UVM and written in #HowToBeAnAntiracist, and contemplating what it means for #vted schools and educators.
Specifically, @DrIbram asks us to look at the outcome or impacts of policies, not their intent. Policies are racist if they have outcomes that disproportionately impact one group over another. Are #vted schools and educators looking for disproportionality in data?
Data from 2015 shows that Black and Native American students were 2 to 3 times more likely to be suspended from school than white students in Vermont, a clear indicator of racist policies and practices in #vted schools: vtlegalaid.org/sites/default/ā€¦
