Great speaking with OAG's Labor Advisory Committee today where we heard from local labor leaders how #wagetheft is still a major problem and how more DC resources are needed to stop this illegal activity. ImageImage
Our office worked with @councilofdc in 2017 to obtain independent authority to investigate and bring #wagetheft cases.

Since then, we've launched over 30 investigations and recovered millions of dollars from unscrupulous businesses that have stolen wages from District workers.
@councilofdc Workers who have experienced #wagetheft or other wage and hour violations can contact OAG by calling (202) 727-3400.

Workers can also learn more about their rights under District law by visiting oag.dc.gov/wagerights

🚨#BREAKING: We've secured a settlement requiring Power Design—a major electrical contractor—to pay $2.75 million to resolve #WageTheft & #WorkerMisclassification case. OAG holds employers accountable when they deny workers wages & benefits they’ve earned: bit.ly/36Y3xGv
We alleged Power Design misclassified 500+ workers as independent contractors instead of employees to cut costs and avoid legal responsibilities, like paying overtime & taxes.

This settlement is OAG’s largest #WageTheft recovery both in value & the number of affected workers.
As part of the settlement, Power Design is required to:

✅Pay nearly $880K in back wages to workers

✅Pay $1.8 million to DC

✅Pay $50K to support apprenticeships, job training, or workforce development programs in DC

✅Implement measures to comply with DC worker protections

❌Stealing from workers
