[On brink of collapse, #NationalSecurityLaw will be passed by JUNE 30]

1. Against all critics, #nationalsecurity legislation is effectively a done deal. Far earlier than previously expected, the law will be passed on or before JUNE 30, on eve of anniversary of #HK's transfer. Image
2. Just like Chinese style cover-ups, the full draft of the law will be made public ONLY AFTER its passage, as a maneuver to reduce dissenting voices in general public. Once the law is passed, it will be used as the new weapon to crush dissidents. Image
3. By far, I see at least three fatal impacts: 1) Tailor-made offences for key activists and foreigners based on diplomatic needs, 2) Cut-throat damage to judicial independence, and 3) Beijing's direct rule by installing China's institution in the territory of Hong Kong. Image

1/X. Here is an impressive report on the depressing arbitrary detention—once again—of the admirable lawyer DING Jiaxi.

Pls note the emphasis his wife properly puts at the end of her interview on the crucial importance of publicizing cases like this.

2/X. The ongoing, current, strange tale of lawyer #WangQuanzhang may be a significant example of the favorable impact of worldwide interest in his case. Unlike earlier disbarred lawyers who emerged from years in prison, Wang, after a period of uncertainty suggesting...
3/X/ ...that the Party seems to have been deliberating how to respond to unusual international attention, seems to be gradually feeling his way in restoring contacts with the media as well as friends & colleagues and perhaps pursuing a petition to reverse his unfair conviction.

(1/X) It is indeed great news that #WangQuanzhang has finally been allowed to return to Beijing and his family. Many who supported him and his human rights cause for five years will be moved by the video of the family reunion.
(2/X) The significance of Wang’s release from "non-release release" (NRR) in Jinan after a week of the Party’s uncertain waffling in the unusual glare of foreign media has yet to be determined, of course. What are the conditions, if any, of his return to Beijing?
(3/X) Did his dynamic, gallant wife @709liwenzu manage to resist the usual pressures to keep the ex-prisoner at home cut off from the world? Was her illness and hospital trip the straw that broke the Party’s back?

(1/X) An update on the weird & fascinating “non-release release” (NRR) of the famous, disbarred rights lawyer #WangQuanzhang, who is being prevented from returning to his home and family in Beijing and kept in his former residence in Jinan.
(2/X) A local Jinan police station official told Wang's sister that Wang is required to stay there because he is under sentence of “deprivation of political rights” (DPR) for the five years after his “release” from almost five years in prison.
(3/X) This would be a far-fetched interpretation of the criminal punishment of DPR, as I pointed out in my last week’s pre-release op-ed in the SCMP.

(1/3) Here is the sad but not unexpected news of the latest “non-release ‘release’” (NRR), the plight of distinguished human rights lawyer #WangQuanzhang and his family @709liwenzu.

(2/3) My Wed. SCMP op-ed below anticipated the outcome. Thus far I have not seen any PRC attempt to rationalize its continuing refusal to free Wang after completion of his 14 days of alleged Covid-19 quarantine.

(3/3) Despite all the greater distractions, I hope the media will press Beijing with questions designed to stimulate an explanation for this latest example of NRR, another blatant violation of both Chinese domestic law and internationally-guaranteed human rights.
