I'm the DC Chapter co-Lead of @MomsDemand. It's really a lot of work. There's a lot to do in this city and our advocacy is 2-fold. I'm gonna tell you about it. Because there are so many layers. And the past week has almost taken me out of this role.
3 years ago, my then-4 yo was in preK4 at the public school 2 blocks away. I was working full time and shootings were regular national AND local news stories. I was lamenting to a client that as Black Americans, my kids are 10x more likely to die by gun than their white peers.
At that time I didn't think my son was participating in active shooter drills. She told me he was; and she gave me the right words to ask him about it so I could know for sure. That day when picked him up I asked and cried as he gave me the answer I didn't know to assume.

Today is #CanadaDay and for many of us it is a day to reflect and mourn, to honour the survivors of the horrifying residential school system and remember the thousands of young Indigenous children who lost their lives due to neglect and abuse.
What else can we do? (short thread)
1/ Talk to our kids about it. Here's some suggestions.…
2/ Raise awareness. That's what the #WearOrange movement is all about.…

This weekend, I #WearOrange because there is too much gun violence, including in the City of Orange which I represent.

Aiden Leos, Jenevieve Raygoza, Luis Tovar, Letitia Solis Guzman, Matthew Farias, and tens of thousands of other victims of gun violence should be alive. 1/
Yesterday morning, I was proud to join @wave4all, @oc_brady, @MomsDemand, and @Everytown for a discussion on how to end gun violence in this country, and how CA can continue to lead the way. 2/
I described my bill #SB264, which would end the sale of guns and ammunition on state property, thereby eliminating most gun shows at the county fairgrounds and getting the state of CA out of the business of selling guns. 3/

On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, a high school student from the south side of Chicago, marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. #WearOrange Image
Soon after Hadiya’s death, her friends commemorated her life by wearing orange—noting it’s the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves. Gun violence prevention advocate @EricaFordNYC also spearheaded orange as the color of peace through her organization @LIFECampInc
In June of 2015, Hadiya’s birth month, a broad-based coalition asked people nationwide to join in what Hadiya’s friends started for the first annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day and #WearOrange.

The NorCal @MomsDemand #Craftivists had so much fun this afternoon bedazzling our #MomsDemandAction and #WearOrange shirts (and my #WearOrange bandana!)
🧵⬇️ lots of photos below!!

The event started out as a comment about how we love Florida @MomsDemand fundraising T-shirts using our own California @Naptivist’s slogan #dontthankmejoinme, and I joked we could have a craftivist party to add our call to action onto the shirts...

Thanks @ewiley33 for the great shirt 💡- ours now say Text READY to 644-33. Happy to help FL fundraise for busses for your awesome Advocacy Day last week! (We have serious Photo Envy - our CA photographer @Alex02ny is scouting out 4-story shots in Sacramento 😜)

As a nation, we are experiencing a gun violence epidemic that kills thousands each year, injures thousands more, and traumatizes whole communities.

I #WearOrange because I am committed to data-driven solutions that can help end gun violence and make our communities safer. Image
Attorneys General and leaders around the country must use every tool we have to #EndGunViolenceNow.

We must prioritize health and support services for those who have experienced gun violence and address the stress and suffering it causes in too many communities. #WearOrange
Our office launched a violence interruption program called #CuretheStreets, which uses proven public-health strategies that treat violence like a disease that can be interrupted, treated and stopped from spreading—and it has already seen positive results:

Surviving gun violence is not a shared experience I want for anyone. We deserve more than ineffective leaders that refuse to take actions that will protect us. #wearorange
For every school massacre that makes national headlines there are also kids fighting for survival everyday because of street violence. We must do better for our youth. #wearorange
It breaks my heart knowing that our kids are practicing “active shooter” drills because this has become the norm. #wearorange

Every day, 96 Americans are killed by gun violence, and on average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides every year. Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed with guns than people in other developed countries.
I recently signed the proclamation for National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Portland, and I encourage all citizens to support their local communities on efforts to prevent gun violence.
Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to Wear Orange on June 1st, the first Friday in June in 2018, to help raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors. #WearOrange Image

I got an orange tattoo for my friend @fred_guttenberg whose daughter Jaime was shot & killed in the Parkland mass shooting. I didn't get the honor of meeting Jaime, but I've met Fred & I proudly stand with him. It's position right under Dawn's name!
#NeverAgain #NeverAgainMSD
The good pain of this tattoo is nothing compared to the never-ending pain Fred & his family have to now endure. This weekend is #WearOrange weekend & I thought it was fitting that I got an orange tattoo to start the weekend & to honor Jaime. #SurvivorStrong
After Jaime's murder, Fred started Orange Ribbons For Jaime which is a 501(C)(3) foundation whose purpose will be to support causes important to Jaime in life, but also causes that will deal with why her life was tragically cut short.

5 yrs ago at a meeting w/my constituents in Tucson, AZ, a troubled young man opened fire, injuring 12 & killing 6. I was shot in the head.
When I was shot, the bullet tore through the left side of my brain, an injury that is almost always fatal. Somehow, I survived.
Today, speaking is hard for me. My eyesight isn’t very good. My right arm & right leg remain mostly paralyzed.…
