BREAKING new data from @FiveThirtyEight:

There were almost 94,000 fewer abortions in states that implemented bans post-Dobbs, just between July and March.

Almost 100k affected and that's not even the full year. fivethirtyeight.com/features/abort… Image
Abortions rose by ~70,000 in states without bans, but that wasn't enough to make up for the decline. Overall, there were ~24,000 fewer abortions in the U.S. between July '22 and March '23, compared to a pre-Dobbs baseline.
This data is from #WeCount, a project of @SocietyFP, where researchers have been tracking abortion #s for a year. The numbers are estimates and may shift slightly, but it's an extraordinary window into the way Dobbs has already disrupted tens of thousands of Americans' lives.

>10,000 fewer legal abortions in the US in the 2 months after the #RoevWade Supreme Court decision. Between Apr-Aug, the number of abortions declined by 6%. If these trends persist, there could be at least 60,000 fewer abortions in the next year as a result of the decision.

That figure is a net. A few states are absorbing some but not all of the demand for abortions in states where it’s now banned.
It’s likely that the decline in abortions represents thousands of women who sought abortions illegally or didn’t get one at all.

There´s an enormous amount of fluctuation between states. In all states that saw declines in their abortion numbers — which include the 15 states in which abortion was banned or severely limited over the summer — the number of abortions fell by about 22,000.

New data, exclusively shared with @FiveThirtyEight, indicates that at least 10,000 women were unable to get an abortion in July and August because of Dobbs. fivethirtyeight.com/features/overt…
The data, collected by researchers at #WeCount, a project led by @SocietyFP, found that abortions did rise in many states in the two months after Dobbs - but that increase wasn't enough to make up for the dramatic decline in the South and Upper Midwest.
Overall, the data suggest that in July/August, over 20,000 women were unable to get an abortion in their home state because of post-Dobbs bans or restrictions. Some of those women appear to have traveled to states like IL and NC. But not everyone could make the trip.

We've got to keep up this fight. But I think we've ALSO got to realize how banana-peel slippery is the ground under our feet. The whole system's ultimate aim is transparently to remain non-transparent! Whatever sleight of legislative/administrative hand that takes. 1/
Like, for example, seizing on a touchscreen "crisis" to push "paper," while KNOWING that the computerized devices that will mark that paper for the voter are just another open invitation to rig. And like promoting the useless SEA act in place of the effective SAFE act. 2/
I've called it "One step up, two steps back" (with apologies to Bruce) and I believe it is why we don't need the SEA act but a SEA CHANGE. We need to wake America's voters up to the fact that this is THEIR democracy being destroyed and THEIR responsibility to SAVE it. 3/
