1/8 When I was a middle school ELA teacher, I was reprimanded for letting my students self select books & for setting aside most of 1 day a week for silent sustained reading. My detractors used words like "rigor" & "canon" & "literary merit."
2/8 I did have a strong ally, though--the school librarian. She explained that my students were the only ones who regularly used the library, who were actively discovering what they loved.
3/8 I saw so much growth throughout the year. Discoveries & delight & personal revelations. It wasn't magic. Some still struggled. But I felt it was the best I could do in the time allotted.

I’m going to tweet the covers of MG & YA books written by Black & Afro-Latina authors. I’ll tell you which ones I’ve read or taught. Buying and/or reading books by Black creators is something we can do to show support.
Most of these books are still in my TBR like, but I read and loved SOLO by @kwamealexander, TYRELL by @coebooth & LONG WAY DOWN by @JasonReynolds83! #WeNeedDiverseBooks #blacklivesmatter
Highly recommend ON THE COME UP by @angiecthomas, GHOST BOYS by Jewell Parker Rhodes, MONDAY AIN’T COMING by @WriteinBK, I AM ALFONSO JONES by @PoetTonyMedina, Stacey Robinson & John Jennings & GHOST by @JasonReynolds83.

I'm seeing a lot of white friends post about a desire to learn more about racism but many are unsure where to begin. We can't bring back #GeorgeFloyd but we can learn how to be anti-racists and teach kids how to, too. #sschat #EduColor @Spencer_Fdn @BeaconPressBks @Tolerance_org
Look at whom you follow on @Twitter. Are you following people and orgs that can educate you about race, like @DrIbram @nhannahjones @ProfJeffries @imaniperry @LoriTharps @JasonReynolds83 @facinghistory & @Tolerance_org @AntiracismCtr @WesleyLowery @jabariasim @TWW_podblog ...
Look at your book list. Do you and your children read books by a diverse group of authors? For kids, All-American Boys by @KielyBrendan & @JasonReynolds83 is a great way to spark conversation with your child. #weneeddiversebooks

The latest diversity numbers in book publishing were released this morning. Figures show the industry is JUST AS WHITE as it was four years ago. This study includes 153 book publishers & agencies, including The Big 5 publishers, which control nearly 80 % of the market. @LEEandLOW
For insights on the study and the industry, follow this thread. You can find the full results of the 2019 survey here. blog.leeandlow.com/2020/01/28/201…
The 2015 study can be found here: blog.leeandlow.com/2016/01/26/whe…
@LEEandLOW The figures come at a time when the book industry is facing a storm of criticism over #AmericanDirt, a novel promoted as the great immigrant novel of our times. Latinos say the book is inaccurate, riddled w/stereotypes -- the result of a tone-deaf industry that shuts out Latinos.

Since it took me so long to post pics from the Dec. 5 @JCASLKY Holiday Party @Flanagans502, I thought I'd make a thread of it. We shared our #AASL19 stories and had toasted ravioli, chicken wings, artichoke, spinach dip, veggies, cake.
Guess who won a door prize @JCASLKY’s Holiday Party? JCASL’s secretary @Amy_BakerLMS & occasional @KylChat mod. Amy helps facilitate so many great things @WilkersonTElem. Svc projects, collabs, newscasts, & more to show #kidscanmakeadifference. #jcpslibraries @jcpsforward.
@Amy_BakerLMS wasn't the only winner. Everyone but one at the Holiday Party walked away with a door prize! Sorry, @crystoannielib. Speaking of, here she is with Stacie Alvey @alveyinthelib, Kim Tullbane, and Jackie Marrs @Reederchik. They are all #LeadingFromTheLibrary this year.

There is a need to have positive messaging about LGBTQIA+ experience and make ability/disability visible. Rep is better but we have a long way to go. #wndb #weneeddiversebooks

I don’t know who needs to hear this right now but:
-publishers don’t expect writers to take the first amount they offer on a book
-editors don’t expect an author to take all their edits just like that with no pushback at all.
Fight for what you believe in, including your worth.
(Not good ones anyway)
Caveat to that first one: it doesn’t make lowballing okay. The initial offer does set some sense of parameters and if it’s way lower than it should be and you are able to go wide, go wide.*
*in my humble opinion, consult an actual agent, circumstances assorted legalize etc etc

I've posted a little bit about exploring Twitter threads as a new and emerging genre, and people have seemed interested in how that works (including some #HISDELA teachers and #ILAChat members), so here's a general overview!
First and foremost: the reasoning. Research shows that more and more people are getting their news from social media (journalism.org/2017/09/07/new…), which also means that more and more people are getting their news with a heavy dose of commentary.
Whether you agree with that or not...it's happening. And it's happening to our students. So our job is not to judge them or belittle them or shame them--our job is to meet them where and when they are and teach them.
