THREAD 🧵

West Africa gets pretty bad coverage in the mainstream media - it’s all Monkeypox, coups and conflicts!

And that includes Senegal.

#Senegal #African #Africa #westafrica #panafricanism
But Senegal’s actually never had a coup and never waged war against its neighbours.

It’s one of the safest places you can visit.
Did you know that it will become the first African nation to host an Olympic event?

The Youth Olympic Games are coming in 2026 - an 18-day bonanza featuring 35 sports.

#WestAfrica: THREAD - "Militarized Border Security Will Not Stop the Spread of Extremism into Coastal States."
My latest with @lmcsanders and Jordon Moss for @PolicyCenterNS where we provide some suggestions to avoid/limit the spread to #Benin #Togo #IvoryCoast and #Ghana 1/
#WestAfrica: Border strategies must enable trade, communication, and travel. Increasing the burden
of legitimate behaviors will make communities more vulnerable, alienate essential allies, and
lead people to see border officers as the enemy. 2/
#WestAfrica: Border security must serve & engage border communities and their leaders. Those who
live in border zones understand local dynamics better than external forces. They have critical information of what is changing, and have the most to lose from extremist influence. 3/

The coup attempt in #GuineaBissau yesterday came weeks after the military takeover in Burkina Faso and follows last year’s coups in Chad, Guinea, Sudan and Mali.

What drives these more frequent power grabs? The answer is:

it is complicated 🧵
bbc.com/news/world-afr…
As most of these countries are situated in West Africa, it would be easy to think the drivers of these coups are the same across the board, but the reality is more complex:
The January 2022 coup in #BurkinaFaso followed a growing insecurity in the country, a rise in #jihadist militancy and an increasingly frustrated army, especially after a deadly attack on 14 November 2021 left 53 soldiers dead, the highest death toll ever in one single attack.

#ISIS has released the anticipated audio recording featuring its top spokesman Abu Hamza al-Qurashi, titled, “So Narrate [to them] Stories [of the past] so Perhaps They Will Reflect.”
Abu Hamza criticizes Islamic scholars who “misguide” people and preach against #ISIS, saying that they’ll “regret” supporting “tyrants” while they condemn the mujahideen. Typical stuff here.
Abu Hamza condemns the recent peace accords between Israel and UAE and Bahrain, as well as Saudi Arabia opening air space, refuting old conspiracies about #ISIS being a creation of Israel.

As per @BusinessDayNg's rules, I had written this piece before @ecowas_cedeao kinda agreed to let the #Mali coup plotters get away with it... bit.ly/3blLn4n

So keep that in mind when reading the whole thing. Given BusinessDay's paywall, I’ll only post a small part...
There are multiple risks involved in permitting military interventions.

There is the risk of Goita’s junta in #Mali shrinking the civic and democratic space if allowed to stay in office without a definite timeline for returning the country to democratic rule.
In addition, there is the risk that it is unlikely to honour the timeline if one is eventually reached.

But most importantly for us in #Nigeria, is the risk of contagion.

Coups beget coups.

#MuseumsUnlocked #WestAfrica This monument at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg commemorates Anton-Wilhelm Amo (1703-1759), the first person of African descent to teach at a Germany University.
Amo was born near the town of Axim in present day Ghana, and at the age of 4 was taken—either by a slave trader or a missionary (here the historical record is unclear)—to Amsterdam, where was given as a present to Duke Anton Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
Fortunately, the Duke saw fit to educate Amo, instead of forcing him into a life of labor. Amo first attended a grammar school, where he received a classical education, and then the universities of Helmstedt and Halle, where he studied law.

Zamfara in the last 7 days, like the week before it, reveals how the Military and the armed groups are engaged in a cat and mouse game. Human life remains short and brutish, as about 100 people were abducted and over 30 killed in the past week alone.
The state still suffers at the hands of armed men, including areas that witnessed a lull, following Police & Military deployments. The military is not also smiling with many of the people they were deployed to save. So far they have accused hundreds of complicity in the killings.
On Friday, four people were kidnapped in Jangeme along Gusau Magami road. The following day, three persons were also killed and scores abducted on the road to Sabon Birni from Anka by another band of armed men in #Zamfara.

Sudan matters to the stability of Africa in a way that arguably no other country does. It is a complex, big, fragile country with borders to the most complex & fragile regions of the continent. The potential for regional stability contagion are huge if Sudan is distressed
Sudan is critical to stability in the #Sahel, North Africa, the #GulfOfAden, the #NileBasin, the #GreatLakes, East Africa; the Horn of Africa, Central Africa & #WestAfrica. There's no other #African country whose wellbeing can so ripple through the continent like Sudan.
