WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus: Globally, we continue to see encouraging signs in the trajectory of the pandemic. The number of new cases of #COVID19 reported to WHO has now declined for 6 weeks, and deaths have declined for 5 weeks.
@DrTedros: However, we still see a mixed picture around the world. The number of deaths reported last week increased in 3 out of WHO’s 6 regions: Africa, the Americas and the Western Pacific.

Note the *idea* is not new - many academics and experts have previously called for int'l laws on at least some aspects of global health (see more recently @haiknikogosian & @IlonaKickbusch bmj.com/content/372/bm…). March op-ed however marks first significant high-level support
#WHA74 today agreed to meet again in November, at a special session of the World Health Assembly, to consider developing a WHO global agreement on preparedness and response to health emergencies.
#WHA74 also agreed on a resolution reaffirming WHO’s role as the directing and coordinating authority in health during emergencies and beyond, and in aiding governments towards achieving resilient health systems and #HealthForAll.
The resolution calls on Member States to provide WHO with sustainable financing, while continuing their response to the pandemic & strengthening preparedness capacities, incl strengthening workforce, research activities, surveillance systems, & adopting a One Health Approach.

Today's #WHA74 resolution on health for people living with disabilities aims to make the health sector more inclusive by tackling the significant barriers many people with disabilities face when they try to access health services.
