@TheEconomist seems to claim we are 'post-truth' in Myanmar becayse local and social media are overhyping successes of resistance

This seems like a straw man and is deeply misleading about the situation on the ground

Firstly, local media and Myanmar Twitter/Facebook are constantly reporting on:

- Funerals of resistance fighters
- Desperate lack of weapons
- Lack of effective leadership
- Capture, torture, burnings of fighters & civilians believed to support resistance

What is being ignored?
There are indeed reports of the very real and historic losses that the Myanmar military faces on all fronts.

The following are happening every week

- Attacks on mil bases
- Losses of whole platoons
- SAC retreats from roads
- Defections
- Admin abandoning entire areas

People's Soldiers Production Team has released their latest version of drone-dropped bomblets, claiming to have twice the energy of similar sized bombs.
This design looks interesting.

For those who dont know, these bomblets are developed by resistance groups in the jungle of Myanmar to fight against Russia-backed junta.
We have been using drone for months.
This is the example:

THREAD: The significance of the UN Special Rapporteur report on arms transfers to the #Myanmar junta can't be overstated. It exposes who supplied weapons to the military since the Feb 1 coup & since the #Rohingya #genocide. Link to the full report via:…
The report includes types & in some cases specific amounts of weapons certain states have transferred to the #Myanmar military. Since the coup, when the junta began attacking & murdering civilians nationwide, #China, #Russia, #India, and #Serbia all supplied weapons to the junta.
The report provides legal analysis: States that authorized arms transfers "knew, or should have known, that their arms would be used to target civilians. As such, these arms transfers to the Myanmar military are not only reprehensible, they also likely violate international law."

The #Myanmar military will appear at the #ICJ in The Hague on 21 February 2022. Their interest does not lie in defending the country against #genocide allegations. #whatshappeninginMyanmar…
In this post I hold that after the attempted coup of 1 Feb 2021, the #Myanmar army "has at no point achieved full control of the country". I further reiterate that @NUGMyanmar "have established working relations with many states and international organizations, including the #UN"
The @NUGMyanmar declared that Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun is the only person authorised to represent #Myanmar in The Hague. They announced that the previous preliminary objections by Myanmar to the lawsuit should be withdrawn, thus encouraging the efforts to proceed with the case.

🔥 Documenting fires in Myanmar

Today we look at methods for documenting the burning of civilian structures.

There are several methods we can use to verify that a fire occurred, and then to map that damage.

1/35 👇
Following reports of a village being burnt, the first thing that we try to do is verify the attack. For that we look for thermal anomaly detections from several satellites that orbit the globe twice per day. These are the VIIRS and Aqua/Terra Earth Observation satellites.
The data from these satellites regularly gets uploaded to a NASA website called FIRMS:;@…

There are a lot of fires (mostly burning agricultural fields after harvest), but if you have specific info it is very useful to verify.

UN Special Envoy calls for non-military-led dialogue with all parties to agree a power sharing agreement as first step towards long-term military transformation.

Reasonable common sense suggestions but lack attention to practical realities...

This is exactly what the UN has been calling for since the 1990s (at least) and what has been consistently blocked & avoided by the military.

This is not an accident. The military could not be more explicit. It knows what is best for Myanmar and its power cannot be questioned.
The closest Myanmar has come to power sharing is the '08 constitution.

The SLORC/SPDC held National Convention but dominated proceedings like a petulant monarchy, offended everyone, took no one elses suggestions and - of course - did not let the UN anywhere near the process.

Today we release a database showing WHERE, WHEN and HOW more than 38,000 buildings were destroyed in Myanmar's Rakhine State between 2017 & 2020.

Here is the data: Here is an explainer thread on the work by @ocelliproject @KayleighRuiter & @C4ADS👇🛰️
The data has been turned into a visualisation and interactive website by @C4ADS & @Jack_Mrgln. We wanted to make sure that this data is accessible to all levels of researchers, so please do click around and use it to further your investigations & research
First, WHO are we?

We're a group of volunteers (yes we do this in our spare time) specialised in mapping and databases. You can see more of what we do at @ocelliproject.

We focus on making publicly available geodatabases to help journalists, investigators and researchers.

Police & soldiers have killed over 1300 people & arrested over 10,000 protesters & others.

Systematic post-coup abuses, like those inflicted on the Rohingya, amount to crimes against humanity.…

Why do horrific abuses & mass atrocity crimes keep happening?

Because the perpetrators keep getting away with it.
The problem is one of IMPUNITY, which is unfortunately not a very common word & maybe sounds a bit legalistic, so many people may turn off when they read it.

Strange it's not a very common word, though, given it's so central to so much of what's wrong with the world today. Image

In Myanmar's Chin State, a Tatmadaw convoy of 75 vehicles has been making the 150km - 3hr drive from Matupi to Mindat for the past 9 days. Since Nov 4 - when attacks began by the CDF - they've only been able to move an average of 8.5km per day, approx 60 troops have been killed.
Since a surge of Tatmadaw troops to Chin state in early October (well documented by @ChinHumanRights), these troops have only been able to move in large crawling convoys, essentially ceeding the areas away from limited garrisons and the convoys to resistance groups.
@ChinHumanRights This has allowed parallel administration structures in Chin state to flourish - for example the Mindat Public Administration Team has reopened practically every school under a NUG-supervised curriculum, with over 2k students returning to school under their control.
