Popular culture does not prepare us for the reality of #disability and illness. Here are 7 facts and personal observations from me (ie: not applicable to everyone): šŸ§µ

1) Illness and disability are common human experiences. ie: Not rare, and not because someone is cursed or bad
2) #ChronicIllness is defined broadly as conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both. Chronic illness is very common and effects an estimated 40% or more of the population. Again, not rare.
3) 'Most' disabilities and chronic illnesses can be improved in terms of symptoms and quality of life, but wonā€™t be ā€˜curedā€™. ie: You will most likely have to live with it for a long time. This is true even though you're doing ā€˜the right thingsā€™. See: positive thinking, kale, etc

The city of #Llubljana in #Slovenia, population 280,000, kicked cars out of its center 15 years ago.

It's become a paradise for walkers, children, bike-riders.
People with limited mobility can use the free Kavalier electric shuttles to take them where they need to go...
...more on this great service here.

This from the city's tourist board: "In #Ljubljana we believe tourism should be accessible to everyone. ā™æļø That's why STIC Ljubljana is now providing a free rental of electric attachment for #wheelchairs."

Engracia said in multiple interviews: ā€œMobility devices are an extension of our bodies. When they are damaged or destroyed, we become re-disabled. Until the airlines learn how to treat our devices with the care and respect they deserve, flying remains inaccessible.ā€
So few non-disabled people seem to understand that #wheelchairs are not simply interchangeable. It's not like a kitchen chair or even a car you can just go out and buy off the lot. They are customized to the disabled person's body, an extension of the person, like a prosthetic.
If my wheelchair is ever damaged or stolen, I can't just go out and pick up another at some shop. I would need to make another custom order with the right specs for my body and condition, pay thousands, and wait for months for the replacement to arrive.

Thereā€™s been a surge in walking and cycling in the #pandemic. Government has promised extra billions. Itā€™s what @TheGreenParty has campaigned for, for many years. So how is it looking in #Sheffield?

A THREAD ...
To set the scene ā€¦ since the 1960s, Sheffield had been developed to encourage the private car. Politicians competed for the motoristā€™s vote.

The Ā£2 billion, 25-year #PFI contract with #Amey failed to enhance safe pedestrian crossings or walking routes, safe cycling facilities, safe dropped kerbs for wheelchair users, safe routes to school.

It was a contract to keep roads just as they had been 25 years previously.

Thinking of taking your loved one out of #longtermcare during the #covid19 ? There is *no easy answer*. But here are few things to think about:
1) Do they need to be transferred (bed / toilet / shower) and how would you do that?
2) Do they need a Hoyer lift? (thread continues)
3) Do you have the medications and expertise to provide the medical care?
4) Are you in danger of infecting other vulnerable members of your household?
5) How will you support them if they have dementia?
6) Do you have knowledge on how to support #incontinence & the products?
7) Who will you call if they get sicker either with #Covid19 or their underlying #health issues?
8) are they going to lose their #placement in the #nursinghome (in Ontario - the answer would be yes)
9) who else in your home needs care?
10) how will you support #socialengagement?

My friend and erstwhile colleague @GovindSankar reminded me of this.
In 1994, I was elated at being accepted by the super-prestigious Tata Administrative Service, #TAS right after my #MBA . I was even more thrilled when I was chosen to be a part of the Tata Singapore Airlines JV
...to start a world class airline in India - perhaps the most exciting thing happening in Indian aviation, if not Indian industry, at that time. Very few people know that the original inspiration for Singapore Airlines was JRD Tataā€™s @airindiain -
ā€“ then amongst the best airlines in the world. The bureaucrats from #Singapore came to learn from him and his company on how to build a world-class airline out of Singapore.
