The MET is STILL institutionally racist. In February a UN working group wrote to the UK Govt to express “very extreme concern” about its failure to address “structural, institutional & systemic racism” against people of African descent in Britain.
theguardian.com/world/2023/jan…
The UN working group of experts on people of African descent called for an immediate & unconditional moratorium on the use of joint enterprise, warning it was leading to the disproportionate imprisonment of black adolescents.

In the damning interim findings that concluded a 10-day fact-finding mission, the experts also called for an immediate moratorium on the use of strip searches during stop & searches by police.

The #RefugeeBanBill is a deplorable, illegal & unworkable attempt to rip up the human rights of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

It comes from a Tory Government desperate to divide & distract us during an economic crisis exacerbated by their policies.

🧵

1/21
Instead of offering safe routes to sanctuary in the UK, the Government is attempting to ban asylum and human rights claims from people who have escaped some of the worst horrors in the world and forcibly remove them instead, with sweeping new detention powers pending this.

2/21
It flies in the face of the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, drafted in the wake of the Holocaust: “refugees shall not be penalised solely by reason of unlawful entry or because, being in need of refuge and protection, they remain illegally in a country”.

There were distressing reports yesterday that chartered deportation flights to Jamaica are being resumed, with one scheduled for 2 Dec. Aspects of these removals have been deemed unlawful by the Court of Appeal. [1/13] independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
It is unclear whether deportations are being carried out lawfully at present, but we're not bursting with confidence that they are, to put it mildly, given the revelations of the past few days. [2/13] theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/n…
What *is* clear is that we now have parallel seams of human rights abuses being perpetrated simultaneously against Black and brown people, largely of limited economic means - the #WindrushScandal, which relates to deprivation of UK residency/citizenship and documentation; [4/13]

@RussInCheshire I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. I must say, you're being remarkably stoic about it. I dare say you're in bits inside. Be kind to yourself. 😇

Meanwhile, don't worry about #TheWeekInTory. I've made some notes for you...
@RussInCheshire To start off #TheWeekInTory, some good news —possibly because it's got nothing to do with Tories.

19AUG20: The 1st polar bear to be born in UK for 2yrs will move from its Scottish home to an English Park.

Hmm. That might make a good metaphor for something more political...
@RussInCheshire 1.#WorldHumanitarianDay began tragically when the body of a 16yr-old Sudanese refugee trying to cross the Channel with a friend in a dinghy rowed by shovels washed up on a French beach.

2.Priti Patel responded with invective against criminal gangs, bypassing compassion & concern

Britain is adept at airbrushing its history. We remember the abolition of the Transatlantic slave trade, while forgetting its initiation and perpetuation.
We celebrate the culture of the Raj, white Kenya etc, while forgetting the murder and theft underpinning British colonialism
We know that colonial atrocities were perpetrated by other nations. But the great majority of people in the UK are unaware of the horrors perpetrated, within living memory, by our own government:
theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
To judge by comments on Twitter, many people are determined to remember #EdwardColston's "philanthropy", and determined to forget the origin of the money he spent.
(Philanthropy translates literally as a love of people. Which is not how the slave trade is usually described)

At least 18 MPs are expected to throw their hats into the ring to run for leader of the Conservative party following PM May’s resignation🏇

ICYMI, we've done some digging into how each of the (so far) declared candidates stack up on human rights ⚖️

Boris Johnson. As Foreign Sec, he said: “Standing up for human rights is not only the right thing; it also helps to create a safer, more prosperous and progressive world.” But watchdog @hrw has described his approach to HR as “weak, inconsistent, and often incoherent”. 📸:FT
@hrw Andrea Leadsom. The former Banker “positively abstained” from the equal marriage vote in 2013. She said this was because she could not “vote for a measure that risks centuries of faith based belief in marriage as between a man and a woman.” 📸: No 10/Flickr.

A quick THREAD on the contradictions of the home office and @sajidjavid over the stripping of #ShamimaBegum's British citizenship.
It's a MUST READ to see just how @theresa_may's old department's #hostileenvironment appears to discriminate against BAME people... 1/n
So currently there are international laws which state that when a citizen commits a crime in a foreign country, that country has the right to deport the person to their home country. This is accepted, and not a contentious issue. 2/15
In fact, the British gov't loves using these powers.
It regularly deports British residents of Caribbean descent. People who moved to Britain as toddlers and have British kids have been taken away from their families and sent 'back' to the Caribbean. 3/15

After a week visiting #Delhi and #Mumbai in #India and talking to people in Universities, thinktanks, business and international trade about #Brexit, a short thread summarising what I heard. /1
The EU is seen primarily as a free trade bloc, and a successful one. Therefore, for the UK to leave in order to pursue 'free trade' is seen as somewhat baffling. /2
UK policy on migration is well-known and the referendum was seen, in part, as the UK turning its back on Europe - but also the world. The refusal to discuss high-skilled migration from India to the UK will prevent discussions on trade. 3

. @neil_parish MP for Tiverton & Honiton

When you voted to trigger A50 you knew that the
Govt ref. leaflet sent to every household did not mention the
Good Friday Agreement & how leaving the EU will impact it.

Why did you vote to trigger A50?
Ken Clarke MP didn't.

When you voted to trigger A50
you knew that regulatory alignment would be required for
Northern Ireland, as highlighted by the phase 1 report from 2017,
requiring both the SM & CU.
Does it not make sense to stay in the CU & SM?

you knew that it would have customs implications for everything from cars to fresh food.

If there is no deal how long will supermarkets have fresh produce on their shelves?
