NBC's 'Today' had a puffball segment Wednesday cheering the genocidal Chinese for their #BeijingOlympics in February and star Eileen Gu, the American teen who chose to compete for China.

Earlier in the show, they got upset about Roe and women being under siege in the U.S.....🤔
Later, NBC's Hoda Kotb lamented Eileen Gu faced "backlash" for choosing to compete for China instead of the U.S. at the #WinterOlympics.

She then allowed Gu to dismiss China's record b/c she wanted to "us[e] sport as a force of communication" to introduce Chinese people to snow
NBC's Hoda Kotb, excusing genocide: "Do you feel you needed...a thick skin for what came at you after that?"

China's Eileen Gu: "Absolutely....People...have their...opinions...[T]here's no wrong or right. There's only intention & I'm trying to make the world a better place."

⛸️Kamila Valieva, the Russian 15-year-old figure skater, left spectators spellbound on Monday, when she became the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the #WinterOlympics

But now, her medal hangs in the balance.

Thread 👇🧵…
📰It has been reported that Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, a medicine used to prevent angina attacks and to treat vertigo, but which can also help endurance and increase blood flow efficiency.

The IOC is investigating.
Whatever the outcome, the alleged scandal has highlighted an unfortunate truth about figure skating.

🔴Behind the beauty and elegance lies a brutality, coaches and former skaters say; a gruelling training regime fuelled by intense stress

1/ Nearly all prior #WinterOlympics host cities will see weather conditions that make it difficult to hold outdoor winter sports competitions over the coming decades. The culprit is greenhouse gas emissions and the resulting climate change.…
2/ If global emissions reach targets set by the Paris Climate Agreement, eight previous host cities might be considered reliable hosts by the 2080s. If the targets are missed, only Sapporo, Japan, would be able to provide fair and safe conditions.
3/ Optimal conditions for the Winter Olympic Games include:
🌡️ Temperatures between −10°C and −1°C (14ºF to 30ºF)
❄️ Days with more than 10 cm of natural snow
🌧️ Days with less than 1 mm of rain (more than 1 mm creates wet snow)

I’m finding the #WinterOlympics painful to watch

It isn’t just men’s genitalia getting pummelled, it’s women’s too

For matters of good taste, I’m not going to post the clip of the couple’s figure skating, but instead leave it to Robin Williams to explain
The #WinterOlympics can also lead to injury when viewers decide to give sports a go in their own homes

Inspired by the #Olympic figure skating, this kid ended up with a blister on the sole of his foot the size of a golf ball.

Want to do better on law school exams?

Here is a lesson from the Winter Olympics that might help.

In 2010, I was a 1L during the Vancouver Games. Men’s figure skating pitted 🇺🇸 Evan Lysacek v. 🇷🇺 Evgeni Plushenko.

Their story changed my outlook on exams forever.

Lysacek and Plushenko were both excellent skaters. The biggest difference was that Plushenko could consistently hit a QUAD jump. Lysacek couldn’t.

Since bigger jumps = bigger base point values that was a huge advantage for Plushenko who needed fewer points per move to win.
Figure skating is 2 parts: short program and long. Plushenko was winning after the short having hit a quad jump. The press called him “King.” Lysacek didn’t even try a quad but was only a bit behind with a program b/c his potential score was lower but he got more points per move.

The Jamaican 4-man national bobsled team has qualified for its first Winter Olympics in more than two decades.

Jamaica’s status as a warm-weather, Caribbean nation competing in the cold weather sport of bobsledding made them cult heroes and underdog favorites at several Winter Olympics between 1988 and 2002.

Much legitimate concern about the 2022 #WinterOlympics being hosted by communist China, one of the great human rights oppressors in the world.

In my view, there are very few countries on the planet more antagonistic to the Olympic spirit than communist China.
The 1936 Olympics, in many ways, legitimized Hitler’s Germany to the detriment of millions of Jews and others oppressed by the Nazis.

In 2022, it will be the Uighurs and freedom itself oppressed by the Chinese communists.

Not exactly the venue to uphold the Olympic spirit!
Should we make the same mistake again?

We certainly don’t want to penalize U.S. athletes, but we also don’t want to reward the Chinese communists.

Day three! Marsha P. Johnson, a pivotal figure in LGBTQIA rights since the beginning. Her efforts during the Stonewall Riots (50 years ago this year!) helped pave the way for the progress the community has made in the past half-century.…
