Thanks @IWS_Network for inviting me to share my story as an #international #immigrant #WomanInSTEM! Throughout this week I will share my journey so far, challenges & triumphs; inviting you to share yours and connect with me if it resonates with you! #VoicesIWS
I grew up in #Delhi #India, a place I still think of as home & where my family still resides. Living in the capital, my parents, sister and I spoke to each other in #tamil, #hindi, & #english. My mom was my first #chemistry teacher. #WomenInSTEM #VoicesIWS @IWS_Network Image
As a teenager I fell in love with the vibrant colors & creative possibilities of the chemistry lab. Nandini ma'am & other excellent teachers, most of whom were #WomenInSTEM at The Mother's International School were my role models. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS #WomenInSTEM Image

For #WomensHistoryMonth I'm going to tell you a story of a #womaninSTEM who:

- 95% of you have never heard of
- 4% of you that have only know her name from a test question
- 100% of us depend on her work to enjoy our modern lives.

Her name is Maud.

Dr. Maud Menten.
Maud Leonora Menten was born in 1879 in Ontario. She went to school at the University of Toronto, where she studied medicine.

In 1904, she got her BA.
Her M.B. in 1907.
Her M.D. in 1911.
And her Ph.D. in 1916 .

But she did her thesis work in Chicago and Germany.

Why?
Canada didn't allow women to do research. So in 1912 she moved to Berlin. Here she met up with Dr. Leonor Michaelis, who was doing work on a subject near and dear to every biochemists' heart: enzyme kinetics.

Together they wrote the Michaelis-Menten Equation in 1913.

What's it like being an #ECR #WomanInSTEM?

Well, apparently it's acceptable for senior male colleagues to create your CV, fake a personal statement (getting your research field and degree dates wrong), and then submit to a funding agency.

Without ever discussing it with you.
Yep, this is real.

I only found out when the funders asked if I would be resubmitting my application that wasn't funded in February.

I had to ask them to send it to me to work out who it was behind it!
Update: it has been reported institutionally, and the funder is also aware it was a disingenuous application. We'll see what happens...

And thank you to everyone who has reached out and offered support over this, it is very much appreciated!

This is the second time in 24 hours the focus has been in being polite from within #WIM #PROWD

Traits I value:
visionary, innovative
being accurate
humanism
pro-mental health

Polite is a subjective term, often means aligning w/ status quo. Polite people quietly avoid bullies.
Yes, @KamalaHarris is able to smile through her debates and adhere to expected gender norms and avoid any hint of the racist trope of “angry” as a Black woman. But is that really what makes her qualified? Or is it a career worth of experience as well as times she persisted?
What are our priorities? In a busy world, we will only have a chance to achieve 3-5 max. If we put polite and being on time in those top 3-5, where does addressing safety, quality, inequity, mental health fall? Are we judging someone on timeliness who may have chronic illness?

So I want to share something that happened at work this week that happens to #WomanInSTEM A LOT, and it SUCKS. I wasn’t sure I would because I know some people from work watch my account, but I think it’s important.
We had a customer meeting this week. 20-ish people in the room, another 10 on the phone, aaaand guess who the only woman in the room is.
It’s an important meeting, so the guy running it goes, “We need someone to take minutes and actions and notes. Stephanie how about you do it.”
