1/ An evening thread! New #woodland statistics published by the @ForestryComm cast further doubt on the Government’s ability to halt nature’s decline by 2030🌳

Our first thoughts: 1/4
The Government committed to plant 30,000 hectares of #woodland from 2019 to 2024, but it's lagging behind, by a lot. So far it's taken them *three years* to plant 7,150ha, with just 1,980ha planted last year.

And they plan to be planting 30,000ha A YEAR from 2024.

2/4
And that's BEFORE we look at the woeful protection and restoration of #AncientWoodland, decline in woodland wildlife, the steady influx of tree diseases, and the poor state of #SSSI woodland.

🧵Today is #CleanAirDay.

#AirPollution not only impacts human health but also the health of our woods and trees. Addressing air pollution is vital to protect and restore our ecosystems🌳

@cleanairdayuk
#Nitrogen air pollution is a significant issue for UK woods. According to the #StateOfWoodsAndTrees report 100% of woodlands in England exceed the nitrogen critical load – all will have deteriorated as a result.

Bushy grey beard #lichens were once far more abundant, but are sensitive to #AirQuality. They act as miniature forests on trunks and branches, where invertebrates live and birds forage. They’ve also been found to have anti-growth effects on human cancer cells!

Last week I was fortunate to have the opportunity to volunteer as a Spanish interpreter at a #YoloCounty #COVID19 #vaccination clinic. It was truly exciting to contribute to ending the #pandemic, and I thought I'd share what it was like. Photo of drive-thru vaccination area. First the volunteers arrived (~50 of us), checked in, and were given vests with colors corresponding to our roles. We swore to support and defend the Constitution! Photo of Loyalty Oath. (2/7) #HealthForAll Loyalty Oath or affirmation to the US constitution and State
It was fascinating - we were organized to each perform relatively simple tasks individually and thus collectively performed the complex task of getting people vaccinated. When our kids are all grown up, we hope one day they will tell their own children about the beautiful woodland in their neighbourhood and how the community came together to save it #WestbrookWoodland #villagegreen @WeLoveBath @MoreTreesBANES @waspschool @WestonLitter THREAD Image
The woods are a magical place, with a brook running through it. The dappled sunlight shines through the trees and glints off the clear water @Uhperry #WestbrookWoodland #Bath Image
Kids would paddle in the brook and some would use rope-swings to bravely cross it. Some kids were so daring they would jump straight across, taking a deep breath before they leapt from one bank to the other. @BathPlayProject #WestbrookWoodland Image

HS2 is Britain’s biggest environment project, delivering miles of ecological and landscape investments alongside construction. On #WorldEnvironmentDay, find out more about the huge scale of environment work and the benefits #fornature. gapi.io/6rDW
1/12
HS2’s already created over 60 new #wildlife habitats. Grassland, ponds, and plantings now support reptiles, badgers, birds, and bats. At Finham Brook in #Warks six new ponds benefit great crested newts amid 6,200 new trees. #WorldEnvironmentDay
2/12
HS2’s also planting 7 million #trees and shrubs between #London and #Birmingham alone. Over 40 species are being grown by Crowders Nurseries, a family run #SME in #Lincs. We’ve already planted 350,000 of them. #WorldEnvironmentDay

Today’s #HS2 announcement shows that our expert opinion, that of other NGOs, and the concerns of the public worried about the destruction of the irreplaceable habitat, has been utterly disregarded.
Some 61 #AncientWoods along the #HS2 route are earmarked for total or partial destruction while a further 47 will suffer damage from noise, vibration, light, and pollution. woodlandtrust.org.uk/protecting-tre…
“The Government is riding roughshod over its own environmental ambitions and ignoring lessons learned from the past, by allowing destruction of #AncientWoodland and other important habitats on this scale." - @AdamCormack_ #HS2

Why #WorldWar1 + the 1919 #Forestry Act show why #Northumberland leads the way on forestry and #climatechange: A thread:
... We all agree we need to plant more #trees 🌲🌲🌲
to combat climate change + also because forests / timber is vital to both our enjoyment + economy 1/ Image
In 1919 the country was short of wood = a national emergency. #Northumberland land around Kielder Castle, just south of Scots border, was identified + soon after planting began on an ever expanding basis. The #kielderforest is the biggest in UK + growing with recent additions /2
100 years ago, our island was less than 5% #woodland.
Good news = woodland today covers nearly three times as much land, at 13 per cent, and is probably as wooded as days of yore.
Bad news = we still import more #timber than we grow = bad business + bad for #climatechange 3/
