Today is #WorldAlzheimersDay. My mother is in her 21st year of Alzheimer's. She's still healthy, thanks mainly to how my father learnt to deal with the disease. Daddy passed away four years ago, but she's still well looked after. This is a little bit about their journey.
When my father first suspected in the mid 90's, little was known about Alzheimer's in India. And there was very little literature around. So, he struggled to understand how her mind worked and her moods changed. But he persevered, and one day he discovered that music was a key.
From that day, music was on all day in the house. He got me to make a list of the English music she used to like & Queen and the Beatles played along with Kishore Kumar and Suchitra Mitra. And she would smile & giggle at Fat Bottomed Girls & be transported back to happier days.
