A few weeks ago I promised to get back to some of the useful comments I received in reaction to my tweet on #WorldBicycleDay and a retweet of @BuduMalli’s tweet regarding infra change in Amsterdam.

A 🚲 🧵, there is overlap with my earlier tweets:

First of all, these are very challenging times for #SriLanka and I understand some people are unhappy with celebrating 🚴🏾‍♂️ as many currently resort to cycling because there is no other option.

And yes, safe infrastructure & a cycling friendly code of the road are a must!
3/11
However, for infra & driving habits to change, considerable scale, demand and clout is needed.

In 🇳🇱 cycling gained popularity during the oil crisis in 1973. And the public demand for safe cycling infra followed as accidents increased.

Since then we never stopped 🚴🏼‍♀️.

On #worldbicycleday, we remember Bimal Mukherjee – an intrepid adventurer who, accompanied by his three friends, traveled around the world on bicycles. Their journey was flagged off from Town Hall, Calcutta in 1926. 1/3 Image
The four friends travelled through Arab, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Britain, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Greece, Egypt, Sudan, Italy, Switzerland, France, Denmark, Germany, United States, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Hawaii, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, 2/3
Malaysia and many other countries before returning to India in 1937. Mukherjee chronicled their fantastic adventures in the book, Du Chakay Duniya (The World on Two Wheels) which was first published in 1986. 3/3 Image

Further to this #popup #cycling #sustainability #zerocarbon #worldcyclingday might appear counter-intuitive that Manchester is not supportive of pop up cycle lanes. So a thread👇🚲🚴🚴‍♀️
Pop up cycle lanes have traction with the press and looks like they are also popular with (commuter) cyclists. Light segregation schemes are becoming increasingly popular in other cities on the back of the Covid19 pandemic #Cycling #Manchester
Sure they offer value for money and with being temporary, they also offer adaptability. Estimated cost of constructing a kerb-separated cycle track in central London is
approximately £700,000 per km, compared to around £60,000 per km for light segregation itf-oecd.org/sites/default/…
