In July, the media reported that @Kemsa_Kenya had distributed contaminated contraceptives to various parts of the country. - @StandardKenya
According to the reports, later confirmed by various public agencies, the contraceptives possibly became contaminated because of delays at the Port of Mombasa while awaiting clearance.
UNFPA shipped the contraceptives in question in October 2020 and failure by GoK to allocate a budget for tax clearance caused an eight-month delay. Eventually, the consignment was released after @KeTreasury requested @KRACare to waive the taxes owed.

Today is #WorldContraceptionDay! Let’s discuss the importance of contraceptive options for people with penises* & how this relates to bodily autonomy.

A thread 🧵 [1/n]
*A note on language: Most research talks about ‘male-focused contraception’, but we don’t want to use this language as it excludes ppl w penises who don’t identify as men. There is a gap in studies looking at contraception specifically 4 trans, nb, and intersex folks! [2/n]

Different ways you can prevent pregnancy with their pros and cons

1. The Male Condom

A sheath usually made of latex that covers the penis and blocks sperm from reaching the vagina

How effective? 95%. But in actual use about 85%

Side effects: some people have a latex allergy
Female condoms

Cheap also, but availability is not as common as the male condom, it is put into the vagina and blocks sperms from reaching the uterus.

Side effects: allergies to latex
How effective? About 79%

Many people do not know how to use it properly, some haven't seen it
Cervical cap:
A cap-like device that covers the cervix, can also be filled with spermicides(substances that kill sperms.

The issue is that it has to be in for some hours after sex and some people can develop very serious reactions to the spermicide.

How effective? 80%
