15 years ago I published my first article. It was about the Mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi'i in Cairo, built in 1211 by Sultan al-Kamil, nephew of the great Saladin. Now it is again resplendent thanks to an exquisite restoration by May al-Ibrashy & team. A story for #WorldHeritageDay
In 1180, Saladin had vanquished both the Fatimids and the Crusaders, and his first construction in Cairo - even before building the Citadel - was here, at the burial place of the Imam al-Shafi'i, founder of one of the Sunni legal schools and long a beloved figure in the city.
Imam al-Shafi'i's mausoleum was located in the most southerly of Cairo's ancient necropolises, often called the Cities of the Dead, though then, as now, they were in fact filled with life. theislamicmonthly.com/living-amongst…

On the occasion of #WorldHeritageDay, it’s worthwhile to look into one of the great heritage sites of TN, Vaikuntha Perumal temple in Kanchipuram. Built by Pallavas, this Divya Desam, which is also called as Parameswara Vinnagaram has a set of panels depicting the Pallava History
Let’s look at some of the panels of this 8th century temple. This one illustrates how the Pallava dynasty was started. On the left, Aswathama, one of the warriors in the epic Mahabharata is doing penance & on right his child was put on creepers. The Child was hence named Pallava
Pallavas claim that they are descendants of Aswathama which is confirmed by the above panel.

The below one is Pallava King Kumara Vishnu doing Ashwamedha Yajna, with the horse tied to the Yupa. He ruled from Kanchi and was one of the earliest kings to perform this Yajna in TN.

For International #WorldHeritageDay, a thread about the threat of climate change to these incredible places. Starting off at the Heart of Neolithic #Orkney World Heritage site in #Scotland at one of the world's oldest stone circles, #StonesOfStenness.
Skara Brae at the edge of Skaill Bay on Mainland, Orkney is, one of the best preserved Stone Age villages in Europe but is increasingly under threat from coastal erosion and worsening storms, & the Ring of Brodgar is vulnerable to extreme rainfall.
You can read the Climate Vulnerability Index (CVI) assessment recently carried out for the #Orkney sites by @UCSUSA, @jcu, @UHIArchaeology, @HistEnvScot, @ICOMOS & @OrkneyCouncil, & @ICOMOS here: historicenvironment.scot/archives-and-r… #CVIheritage

On #WorldHeritageDay I showcase the soul of #Dogra people & the epicentre of their modern history. The images will also reveal how if you want to squash a voice, you erase their history & self-esteem. This site has been a victim of loot, pillage & arson. #MubarakMandi #Jammu
The #MubarakMandi Palace complex holds 300 yrs of Dogra history within itself. With over 20 palaces built over 200 years starting at 1710 it is unlike any other. From here the Dogra rulers reigned over their sprawling kingdom.
For over 200 years, they ruled over an area that stretched from the Pir Panjal mountain range in the north, the plains of Punjab to the South to Ladakh & Tibet in the east.

(A Thread)

World Heritage Day is an annual event celebrated on 18 April every year.
It aims to preserve the human heritage and recognize the efforts of all the relevant organizations in the field.

Ancient Monuments and architectures are reflection of glory of our vibrant past. They show the origin and cultural evolution of our civilization.

Each heritage site has its own value which represents the diversity in culture, art, religion, thoughts etc. ImageImageImageImage
Therefore it’s important to spread awareness about the importance of our common heritages.

Efforts are needed to recognize and protect our ancient buildings, temples, monuments or other natural structures from being destroyed.
