Les travaux de construction du WTC ont débuté en 1966 sur l’île de Manhattan à New York. Le site se situait à l’emplacement d’une ancienne décharge publique, avec un substratum rocheux accessible à plus de 20 m de profondeur.
Il a donc fallu creuser jusqu’à la roche et extraire plus d’1 million de m3 de terre et déchets enfouis (poutres des anciens quais, épaves de navires enterrées). Le lieu de construction impliquait de creuser dans un sol gorgé d’eau, avec de forts risques d’inondation du site.
