Other common crabs of the Gulf of Castellammare, Sicily include: Sea Urchin (Percon gibbesi) especially among break water boulders, Warty (Eriphia verrucosa), Runner Crab (Pachygrapsus marmoratus) - by anemone, & Mediterranean Intertidal Hermit (Clibanarius erythropus) crabs 2/25
These enchanting Rockpool/Grass Prawns (Palaemon elegans) were abundant in the crystal clear, bath-warm shallows of Calla Minnola, Levanzo. Love how you can see, on their head, the toothed rostrum & feather like structures at base of antennae & all their internal organs.

Yesterday, on the 1st day of the UK's #COVID19 lockdown, I started posting a daily #deepsea fact on my instagram (@diva_amon) to help amaze/excite/distract. Will cross-post them here also. Feel free to add comments/questions/etc. & I'll try to get to them #DivasDailyDeepSeaFact
DAY 1: The test used to diagnose #COVID19 & other pandemics was developed with the help of an enzyme isolated from a #microbe found in #DeepSea #HydrothermalVents & freshwater hot springs.

DAY 2: #DeepSea life can be slow. Case in point: the Greenland #shark (Somniosus microcephalus) can live for >400 years & only becomes sexually mature at >150 years old. Yes, it took me a grand total of 2 posts to start talking about sex. I blame @Marahh2o. Video: @oceanexplorer
#InvasionsLabPub Alert! @SmithsonianEnv scientist Erica Keppel led a new paper re-describing the sabellid tubeworm Parasabella fullo after our team discovered the first record of the #invasive worm on a ship hull in California. #WormWednesday #THREAD

Parasabella fullo <pic> looks remarkably similar to native CA worm P. pallida, and lacked a comprehensive description or illustration to easily decipher between the two worms. By re-describing the species, we strengthen taxonomists’ ability to id the worm in non-native habitats.
The main dissimilarities between Parasabella fullo (invasive) and P. pallida (native) are a longer dorsal collar margin in Pf, medium-size, digitiform radiolar tips with broad flanges in Pf, and a difference in the projection of dorsal lips to lateral lamellae length (Table 2).

We’re celebrating #InvasiveSpeciesWeek and #WormWednesday with today’s highlight: BAITWORMS! #DYK that polychaete baitworms and marine algae ("wormweed") are harvested and shipped via overnight mail to bait shops across the globe? #InvasiveSpecies (1/4)
Most of the organisms sold for bait are packed in algae. This algae, which also may be unintentionally introduced, may have species living in and on it that can be introduced when that algae is discarded in the water. #InvasiveSpeciesWeek #NISAW #InvasiveSpecies (2/4)
