The vast majority of remaining old-growth in this province is what scientists call "lower productivity" forests -- stands in areas where conditions like elevation, slope and aspect make for forests with smaller trees smaller less biodiversity.
This old-growth still matters --I've been in some really cool mountain-side or shore-bog forests-- but in addition to holding less ecological value, it's also less valuable as timber and because of that it is hugely over-represented compared to other old-growth.
Action happening now at the Willamette National Forest. From a press release-

Continued from the press release- “The logging is planned on public forestland impacted by the 2020 wildfires directly across Highway 46 from the Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat Center and along the salmon-bearing Breitenbush river, proposed as a Wild & Scenic River.”

In April this section of the Willamette National Forest was standing, but by early May it was effectively clearcut - without any public notice or opportunity to give input. 2/4
The Forest Service quietly changed contracts signed before the 2020 fires, allowing near total tree removal from burned areas. The irony? Original sales were thinning projects to mimic moderate burns, which the forest just experienced, obviating the logging's claimed purpose. 3/4

Police attempted to raid Waterfall Camp after making multiple announcements, both last night & this morning, that there would be no enforcement taking place. Classic. You have to play dirty when you’re losing.
