1 APRIL 1945 - BATTLE OF OKINAWA - #WWII

The U.S. Tenth Army invaded Okinawa in the Ryukyus Islands, which the Japanese considered home territory. The U.S. Tenth Army, commanded by LT Gen Simon B. Buckner Jr., included the Army XXIV Corps and Marine III Amphibious Corps.
The campaign began on 26 Mar 1945 when the 77th Inf Division landed on the small Kerama Islands near Okinawa, after which the U.S. established forward bases to support the next phase of the campaign.

Operation ICEBERG, the amphibious assault on Okinawa itself, took place on 1 April when with the Army's 7th and 96th Inf DVNs, and the 1st and 6th Marine DVNs landed on Okinawa. The 27th ID followed ashore on 9 April.

28 MARCH 1944 - BATTLE OF NHPUM GA BEGINS #WWII

Gen Joseph Stillwell's Burma campaign to reach Jambu Bum got underway on 8 March 1944. Chinese divisions were making progress in Burma, but the British faced a Japanese offensive that also threatened Stillwell's supply line.
Stillwell sent GALAHAD Force, Merrill's Marauders, in two sub-units to envelop the Japanese right flank and cut enemy communications in two places. The 1st Battalion moved through twenty miles of bamboo forests and took position on 27 March. #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC
The battalion surprised an enemy camp at Shaduzup and established a roadblock. To their south Colonel Charles N. Hunter ordered a counter a Japanese attack on the Chinese left flank. The 3d Battalion occupied Janpan and the 2d Battalion took up positions at Nhpum Ga.

18 MARCH 1945 - CENTRAL VISAYAS CAMPAIGN BEGINS - #WWII

After attacking Palawan and Mindanao, General MacArthur directed the capture of the now-isolated Central Visayas, or Visayan islands, of Panay, Negros, Cebu, and Bohol.

While Filipino guerrillas controlled much of the countryside, 30,000 Japanese troops held the vital coastal town. Beyond his immediate objective to liberate the Philippines, the two ports were to be important staging areas for the expected invasion of Japan.

The four islands were in close geographical proximity, but the high mountain range that ran north-south down Negros divided the region into two areas of operations, code named VICTOR I and VICTOR II.

On 11 March, reconnaissance patrols landed on three small offshore islands, including Hauwei and Butjo Luto, to determine if they were suitable for positioning artillery to support the amphibious landing on Manus.
On 12 March, 2d Squadron of the 7th Cav made an amphibious assault with air, naval gunfire and artillery support, and overcame the Japanese defenders the next day with the aid of a tank. The division then positioned two field artillery battalions on Hauwei and one on Butjo Luto.

4-6 MARCH 1944 - BATTLE OF WALAWBUM AND "MERRILL'S MARAUDERS"

As the Allies advanced in Burma, Gen Joseph Stilwell sent the 5307th Composite Unit, called GALAHAD, better known as "Merrill's Marauders" on a wide march around the Japanese right to cut the enemy's communications.
They were named for their commander Brigadier General Frank Merrill. While the Chinese advanced slowly, the commander of the Japanese 18th Division left a force to block the Chinese while he attacked to destroy the new threat to his rear.

3 MARCH 1945 - LIBERATION OF MANILA - #WWII

The battle for Manila, capital of the Philippines, began on 4 February 1945 as the 1st Cavalry Division in the north and the 11th Airborne Division in the south reported Japanese resistance in the city was stiffening.

After liberating the Santo Tomas and Bilibid prisoner of war camps, the XIV Corps continued its advance. The corps commander divided the northern section of the city into two sectors, the 37th Inf DVN responsible for the eastern half and the 1st Cavalry on the western part.
By the afternoon of the 8 February, 37th Division units had cleared most Japanese from their sector, but the costliest fighting occurred on Provisor Island, where enemy defenders held out at the small industrial center on the Pasig River until 11 February.

A five-month lull in ground combat operations followed the Papuan and Guadalcanal campaigns, although there was much action on the sea and in the air.

On 1 March 1943, Allied scout planes sighted a large enemy convoy of eight destroyers and eight transports with a 100 fighter-plane escort. Allied Air Forces engaged the Japanese in what became the Battle of the Bismarck Sea on 2-3 March.
About 335 U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) and Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) planes based on Papua attacked the convoy, and assisted by 8 motor-torpedo (PT) boats in the mop-up phase on 4 March, did great damage.

16 FEB 1945 - SECOND BATTLE OF CORREGIDOR - #WWII

After powerful air and naval preparatory bombardments, XI Corps launched a coordinated airborne and amphibious invasion of the strategic rock fortress of Corregidor.

One battalion of the 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team jumped in on the western portion of the island, followed by an amphibious assault by 3d Battalion of the 34th Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 24th Infantry Division, on San Jose beach southwest of Malinta Hill.
