What a ring road has to do with the papal visit. Photo of white Fiat containing Pope Francis passing through
The Oliver neighbourhood has been a focus for Roman Catholics in Edmonton for 140 years. In addition to Saint-Joachim Church and St. Joseph's Basilica, there's the Archbishop's Palace and the General Hospital, which was founded and run by the Grey Nuns.
Another long-time Catholic institution in the area was the St. Joseph Seminary. Just north of Saint-Joachim, it was founded in 1927 when the Catholic Archdiocese took over priest training from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Its history is here: stjoseph-seminary.com/About/Our-Hist…

1/ This evening around 9:30 I was on the phone with a friend in Toronto. I was getting ready to go get a few groceries, and observing the rules: go to the bathroom before you get in the car.
I was interrupted in my task by an odd rustling sound from the

Bob Frohlich is our tireless and empathetic ID Services Coordinator, and his work is often integral to helping our clients break the cycle of poverty. This is just one of his stories that we wanted to share with you today: (Thread)

"Charlie (name changed) had just arrived in Edmonton from northern Alberta. He stood in front of me with all his belongings (a back pack). His long black braids told me of the pride he carries as an Indigenous man.

"He had worked in the oilfield industry for most of his life but due to changing circumstances, he was homeless, had no income, and lacked ID. Charlie was eager to 'get back on the rigs,' but he needed some help. His dream is to one day to have a 'nice' place of his own.

I recently switched up my commute to #yegdt so that I could test out the new #yegbike infrastructure in AB Ave.

Join me on this part of my commute home and see 4 different forms of infra. Also...has this route been given a quirky name yet? Any suggestions? #yegbike #WardMétis🧵
As we get to Alberta Avenue from downtown, all we have North-South are painted lanes and sharrows. It's not giving All Ages and Abilities.

I suspect we're limited here by the narrow road width and a decision was made to protect one lane of street parking.
At 119 Ave, we arrive at a 'Two-Way Separated Bike Lane on Right-Side of Two-Way Street.' Just like the Garsconastrasse or Oliverbahn (we're going to rename that right?), this route is quite popular.

We took my mom on a ride here to rank each of the bike lanes. This was her fav.

Today in #YEGDT we held an open house for our #ManagedAlcoholProgram (MAP) and their new space - we even got to sample the wine that clients brew themselves. It got grape reviews!
Big things are happening at the MAP space - they just moved into a bigger area to give participants a more dignified and functional drop in space with plenty of activities and ways to get to know each other.
We also started filming a short video that will highlight the positive outcomes and life changing aspects of MAP. We’ll be featuring participant voices as well as agency partners that have seen really incredible stories arise. Stay tuned for that!

🧵I have spent a large portion of my time as Mayor building relationships with our provincial and federal government partners. I believe that collaboration is how we move forward in our city, and I am grateful for the meaningful conversations we have had thus far.
I have met with the Premier and many ministers to highlight what our city needs financially to succeed, to grow our economy, create jobs and support one another as we emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever.
🏠My top priority is supporting and protect our city’s unhoused population. We have asked Premier Kenney to fund the capital construction of 552 supportive housing units that are required in the @CityofEdmonton’s plan to end houselessness.

I was able to pick up a pack of the rapid tests from a small pharmacy in #yegdt - swabbed myself, no COVID. But what this thread is about is how beyond fucking ridiculous it is for the government to expect the average person to do this. 1/ #abpoli #ableg #yeg
For context, I have a physiology degree and took at least second-level university chemistry courses - and it is still challenging to do. 2/ #abpoli #ableg #yeg
The test kit comes with everything you need: swabs, tubes, the reagent, etc. You have to swab yourself, then mix it with the reagent properly, allow the correct amount of time, then put it on the applicator in order to get a correct result. 3/ #abpoli #ableg #yeg

1/ Keeping an eye on drug house's customer, who made it as far as the empty lot - which means she's outside our kitchen window.

We gave our naloxone kit to another who needed it this week, but there's a drugstore at the corner...

2/ She's okay, so far. Moving now, slowly. Getting herself together.

Looks like she'll be okay.

Doesn't know I'm keeping an eye out for her from inside - not just in case of overdose, but in case of assault or theft.

I resent the drug house for the way it eats their lives and
3/ selfishly for the way it turns the neighbours into caregivers, security guards, informants.

She's managed to get to her feet. Fix her hair, like she's in a trance. Saunter away in slow mo.

Didn't need the kit. Phew.

All of it very quiet, not like the nightly commotion of

1/ Yesterday I went shopping in #yeg for a modest set of adjustable dumbbells. I was checking second hand stores, pawn shops.

No luck - but then I spotted a liquidation store that advertised itself as having sporting goods.

They had what I was looking for at a reasonable price.
2/ There was another customer looking for the same thing. The sales clerk came over, chatted us up, offered a further discount if we both bought.

It wasn't the perfect model, but fine for home exercise during COVID-19 restrictions.

While the other customer and I were talking
3/ it over, a woman came in to the shop. She was a senior, struggling a bit with a walker in the rain. She was there to pawn something.

Our clerk explained to her that this was no longer a pawn shop. Then he asked if he could do anything else for her.

She hardly looked at him.
