Heads up, Edmonton.

A FIRE BAN is now in effect as dry, windy and hot conditions are creating a recipe for fire nastiness. #yeg #yegcc #yegwx
Fire ban in Edmonton means no:

open burning
fireworks
backyard fire pits
cooking stoves and BBQs that use fuels such as wood and briquettes #yeg #yegwx #yegcc
Officials will emphasize with compliance over enforcement on fire ban.

But they add they will use fines and charges if necessary - and oh, that could include paying for all emergency costs tied to any fire you start.

I did not think that I would be beekeeping 🐝 in January but was contacted by a family that spotted a wild honeybee colony in a tree 🌲 toppled by Tuesday’s Snow Squall 💨

I was teaching a bee course and wasn’t able to check out the honeybees until this morning - so the family went back and covered the exposed colony with a blanket and tarp.

Yay, family!!

The bees made their home in a hollow cavity at the base of an old spruce tree. They looked like they’d been there for 3 or 4 years.

Unfortunately, the rot that created the cavity undermined the structural integrity of the tree.

We will inevitably have more cold days before the end of winter, but from now on the likelihood of getting those starts to drop. 2/
And so what has Winter 2018-2019 brought us so far?
November started quite cold (September & October were also very cold), but since then things have generally been above average.
Notably, there have been no deepfreezes. Last winter (in red) there were a few by now. 3/
