Great horned owl at #YoloBypass just before sunset doing a little wing stretching
And then just keeping an eye on me ...
And also got some nice views of an American Kestrel a few minutes before that

This is almost certainly an omen of something. Suggestions wanted.

At #yolobypass at sunrise this am. instagr.am/p/CS1tHBOnfKt/ Image
Here are some more details: Given the possibility of some smoke in the air today, I went out really early this AM to #YoloBypass in the hopes of getting some pictures w/ a red sun. I got there before the gate was opened and then, when it was opened at 625 or so I headed in 1/n
I parked at this wildlife viewing area in the rice fields and started walking East looking at the red sun, hoping to see something fly in front of it. After a few near misses I saw an egret flying at just about the right height off in the distance. 2/n

It was quite warm and sunny today around #DavisCA and alas I did not get out in the AM but managed to head out to #YoloBypass in the early PM. I went on a short walk to a spot I knew would be relatively shady. And along the way saw a few nice things like: 1/n
And then I got to this semi-shady spot with a little water hole and waited. And I was rewarded. First, with an otter swimming by. 2/n
And then what I think was a muskrat waddled by (not 100% sure about the ID). 3/n

So I went out early this AM to go for a walk and do some birding. And at the last minuted I changed my mind on where to go and ditched #YoloBypass and decided to go to the @ucdavis Riparian Preserve. 1/n
I got there, parked (see red star) and put on my boots and started walking to the West to head along Putah Creek 2/n Google Map view of area with a red star showing where I park
But then I bumped into a birder who came over to me (wearing a mask) and asked "Are you looking for the Harris Sparrow" and I remembered seeing reports about this bird via @Team_eBird (this was at the point where the Yellow star is) 3/n Google Map view of area with a red star showing where I park

So I had one of those amazing birding encounters I get maybe 1-2 x / year. I went for a walk at #YoloBypass and got in my car and was driving out through some of the rice fields when I saw what was a pretty big bird in front of a bush. I couldn't tell what it was at first. 1/n
Then it turned around and, even with the incredible camouflage, I could tell it was an owl. At first I was not sure what kind. I kind of caught me off guard. 2/n
And so I took a bunch of pics as it sort of hid there. It eventually went into the bush and I lost track of it. So I waited. I then noticed some other birds nearby. Cool. Horned larks. More on them later. 3/n

Amazing encounter with a short eared owl at #YoloBypass tonight. #Birds #BirdPhotography #Owls

My daughter asked me to drop her off to meet a friend in town and so I said sure and grabbed my camera bag thinking I could swing by #YoloBypass for a few minutes. And so I did. 1/n
I got there around 3 PM and the light was getting nice and I headed towards the area where I had seen a short eared owl a few weeks ago. After seeing a few birds here and there I saw a car pulled over up ahead and I approached slowly. 2/n
The person in the car waved me forward and pointed ahead. I got next to the car and the woman in the car said "There is a short eared owl up ahead on the ground.' After scanning for a bit I found it and took a few pics.
