Are you having a hard time keeping track of what the Education Minister has been up to?

I don’t blame you.

After downloading all his responsibilities to divisions, he’s now meddling in public health decisions that aren’t good for his local politics.

🧵

#skpoli #sask
Back in August, while the Minister took the summer off, case counts began to skyrocket. The SHA created a back to school plan to better protect children for the fall term.

The Minister opted to ignore it.

Not wanting to face potential criticism, the Minister downloaded all of the responsibilities, leaving decision-making to the local school divisions to work with their local medical health officers.

'We're frustrated, scared, tired': Sask. heart, brain specialists brace as COVID-19 slowdown worsens | CBC News cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
#yqr cardiologist Dr. Andrea Lavoie and #yxe neurologist Dr. Brett Graham said anyone with emergencies will still receive the same care as always and should not hesitate to call 911.
But hundreds, possibly thousands of others w non-critical needs will have to wait indefinitely.
For ex, all "coiling" operations to prevent high-risk patients from suffering a brain aneurysm are on hold.

And all cardiologists were told Wed to cancel half of all upcoming heart stress tests, angiograms and diagnostic procedures. Cardiac ICU bed space has been cut by 50%.

On the agenda today is the third and final reading of the bylaw banning conversion therapy. Background can be found linked below. @CBCSask

Another topic of interest on the agenda. The flouridation of Regina's water. @HeidiAtter has that teed up here:
cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
Some key context for the bylaw on conversion therapy. There's not going to be any real debate/presentations on the topic. If there are it won't be anything like in previous council meetings.

The topic is likely going to be an up and down vote.

It’a time to take notice of what’s happening in Nova Scotia.

“[Anti-maskers are] nothing more than an alt-right group that wants to protest things like science.”

@IainTRankin, Premier of NS.

Why are other leaders hesitant to say this?

#nspoli

On May 14th, the Nova Scotia Supreme Court granted an injunction to "prevent Freedom Nova Scotia and similar groups from staging illegal gatherings in defiance of Nova Scotia's public health orders."

I'm so envious. 😭

Good morning, all. Before going in this AM, wanted to share some high-level thoughts re: #SK situation with #COVID19. Will try to go into more detail as time allows, but these are some immediate thoughts. My opinion only, please remember. 🧵 begins... (1/n) #COVID19SK
#YQR curve and R0 seem for now to have peaked and are coming down. Hospitalizations & ICU admissions have stabilized. #YQR ICUs still running with ~180% capacity but more beds available now, critical elective surgeries proceeding, etc. (2/n) #COVID19SK
Still widespread community transmission throughout southern SK but has seemed to mostly peak at this point and some places like Moose Jaw are decreasing steadily too. (3/n) #COVID19SK

@JFroh3 I share this out of great respect, Holding back tears...still am as I post this. I hope I transcribed this accurately.

"I would say the black zone is near collapse....They talk about boiling the frog in the water, it just doesn't jump out. Well, maybe we're the frog. We have an acute care system, it's a bathtub. The drain is only so big. The water only goes down so much.

2/n
The tap is the Covid patients. We're in the tub, but we can't turn off the tap. Someone needs to turn off the tap.

Our Regina leaders are severely strained and burdened. ...What their staff and our leaders are reporting it seems like a disaster zone.

My colleagues Lori & Jeff explain the SUPER BAD situation in #YQR ICUs. 2 COVID+ pts / room to maximize nursing & RTs. All ICU beds full in #YQR, city now on ICU/CCU bypass (including cardiac pts). Staff @ breaking point.😢 (1/4) #COVID19SK

cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
I have tried to maintain equipoise but feel I need to say this again: we CANNOT vaccinate our way out of this without losing many lives & overwhelming our ICUs, forcing triage. We NEED definitive & immediate mandated measures to help bend our #SK curve quickly. (2/4) #COVID19SK
We are vaccinating 'easy' folks quickly in #SK. Soon, we will hit road blocks: persons who need improved access & hesitant persons who will need their concerns addressed / questions answered. Nobody can be left behind if we are going to achieve herd protection. (3/4) #COVID19SK

Hi everyone. Coming off 2 weeks of call tomorrow AM. So sorry to be #debbiedowner but holy cats, #YQR hospitals are full of #COVID19 patients either intubated or requiring high-flow O2. Frontline providers are worried, anxious, and scared. (1/n) #COVID19SK
Hypothetically, if 1/3rd of current ward patients in #YQR requiring high-flow O2 deteriorate tomorrow AM and need ICU support, there would not be an obvious place for them to go. ICU beds in #YQR, including surge as of today, would be completely full. Yikes. (2/n)
One challenge we face with these critically ill #COVID19 patients is that they are so sick for so long, there's just no turnover of ICU beds where people improve and can be moved to the wards quickly to make room for new patients. (3/n)

Just finished a series of weeks in the ICU in #YQR @SaskHealth. #covid #b117 is real and is affecting younger individuals (lots under the age of 50, most with no serious medical comorbidities). We as a province need to take the risk of covid-19 seriously and stay safe... (1/6)
... this holiday weekend. Please do not gather even if outdoors unless can guarantee 6 m apart and no sharing of food or drink. #B117 is extremely contagious and does not differentiate between old, young, higher or lower socioeconomic status.... (2/6)
Regina ICUs have surged into high capacity in response to the increasing number of #COVID19SK admissions to the ICU. We are not yet at the peak. Staying safe this holiday weekend will help ensure that we keep covid numbers manageable across Regina and the province (3/6)

Hi everyone, just home. Sorry - has been very busy last 2 days. Still many dramatically sick persons in #YQR hospitals. The impact of watching young healthy persons struggle and die from #COVID19 is having a profound impact on myself and my colleagues. #COVID19SK
This is unlike anything that #SK has seen so far with the pandemic. It is not differentiating between young and old, rich or poor, etc. It is everyone. #COVID19SK
The phrase I am hearing most from frontline colleagues? "I wish people could see what is happening here. Maybe if they could see this, see these people, they would do things differently."

Please, #YQR & #SK - make the best choices. Let's take care of each other. #COVID19SK

1/3 This week, the @CityofRegina council unanimously approved a 1 million $ grant to support a renewable fuel refinery that would produce 1 billion litres of renewable✈️⛴️🚗🚂 fuels per yr with the potential to create hundreds, even thousands of jobs in the #YQR area! 👏👏👏
2/3 I just a/t fell off my🪑when I saw the Sask Party gov't passed the buck, rejecting True North Renewable Fuels’ proposal despite that fed clean tech grants can't be accessed w/t a minimum pledge from the province (or delegate).

Kudos to #yqr council for keeping this alive!
3/3 The SaskParty tells us we must choose b/w the environment & the economy. We're getting left behind.

We can create jobs, advance the economy & improve our environment.

But not if the Sask Party keeps squandering this province's unparalleled potential. 👩‍🏭👷☀️🌊🌬️💧🌾#skpoli

Scott Moe has shown us he can't be trusted. But don't take it from me...just look at his record. During the last #skpoli election, the Sask Party promised there would be no cuts or sell-offs. But when the election was over, they:

➡️ cut $54 million from classrooms (1/4) #sasked
➡️ cut $25 million from universities
➡️ cut 90 healthcare workers in #YXE & #YQR
➡️ sold off STC, leaving thousands stranded
➡️ had dozens of meetings to try to sell SaskTel and SGI
➡️ and much more* (2/4)
We don't have to accept a government that says one thing and does another. It's time to stop Scott Moe's dangerous cuts and choose a government that invests in people.

It's time for change, Saskatchewan. 🛑✂️🛑✂️🛑 (3/4)

Sunday is the final day that the Walking With Our Angels ceremonial teepee will stand outside the #Saskatchewan legislature in #yqr.

Tristen Durocher and supporters arrived Aug. 1, after a 635-kilometre 28-day suicide prevention walk from Air Ronge.

Here's a look back #Thread
“We’ve lost over 2,300 people since 2005 alone. This is the tip of a very grim iceberg."

At 29.7 people per every 100,000, the suicide rate in northwestern Sask. is nearly three times higher than the Canadian national average of 11/100,000.

globalnews.ca/news/7240647/s…
“I was woken up by several men in uniform from the Provincial Capital Commission and the police service."

Overnight into Day 2, the Provincial Capital Commission told Walking With Our Angels their camp violated bylaws.

3/ Those opposed to the statue say it should come down due to the fact that Macdonald created the blueprint for residential schools and deliberately starved Indigenous peoples on the plains.

#frcan

1/ Over the last two years in Saskatchewan, young Black men have mostly made headlines after they have died. #skpoli #canpoli
1. 20-year-old Samwuel Uko died on May 21, 2020 after drowning in #yqr. Prior to his death, he sought help for his mental health. Last night, I broke the story that the Saskatchewan Health Authority apologized to the family. An inquiry has been announced. #skpoli #canpoli 2/

People tend to think the black presence is new on the Prairies, particularly in Saskatchewan. Black people have lived in Saskatchewan for more than 100 years. Wrote about it 3years ago. A reminder in this climate
cbc.ca/news/canada/sa…
The racial inequality conversation in Sask. is not new. The fact that hundreds of people rallied yesterday in #yqr for #blacklivesmater is anchored in a long tradition. It echoes a century long conversation in the province. History is important to bear in mind #skpoli #canpoli
3/ Not posting the picture of the KKK cross burning because it can be triggering. But, important to note that at one point Saskatchewan had upwards of 25 thousands KKK members, the highest number in Canada. The KKK settled in 1926 and gained momentum by 1927. #skpoli #canpoli

Let’s be real - none of your are reading a 251 page report on a Friday.

I’m doing it for you. Here’s a thread on my observations 🧵 #YQR #SkPoli #Sask #YXE
Let’s start in #YQR: Pioneer Village has a LOT of problems. Ventilation is aging, the boilers are 55 years old, staff are under trained and also people may be taking antipsychotics without reason.

Also the rooms are small and lack privacy
Still in #YQR, now at Entendicare Parkside. The current design “does not meet current standards of care”

There are also concerns about standards of care

Nearly $2 billion for 60 kms of road across the flattest part of the prairies: we’re now the owner of the most expensive stretch of flat road in Canada.
We could have built this #bypass with our workers and our companies for a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the problems.

Instead, the Sask. Party put their wealthy and well-connected friends ahead of the people of this province, and we’re left to pick up the tab.
And as @cathysproule says, "More money, more problems — that’s the story of this build, start to finish." #yqr #skpoli
