Pictures of the debris flows that affected the Alaska Highway near Ä'äy Chù (Slim's River), Yukon on Monday. MSc student Crey Ackerson and NSERC USRA Kenya Franz provided helicopter pictures. Slide 1 was the largest, significant debris on the highway. Location map next 1/3 ImageImageImage
Initiation zones for both slides are at the break in slope between the plateau and the steep headwaters. Both areas of initiation zones seem to indicate shallow, permafrost related failures. Some intense rain occurred Sun/Mon. Map from Panya Lipovsky #YukonGeologicalSurvey 2/3 Image
Slide 2 did not affect the highway as much. Both drainages have failed and impacted the highway in the past. Crey and Kenya are out today to get more pictures. So possibly more pictures and hopefully more intelligent comments tomorrow. 3/3 ImageImage

Back from fieldwork so time to tweet about the boulder hunting. This is the central portion of the Ruby Range, SW Yukon. Follow thread for more info. #SFUglacialgeology #YukonGeologicalSurvey Image
We are dating deglaciation, both the Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) and local alpine glaciers. These small cirques would have supported glaciers during the last glaciation (MIS 2). #SFUglacialgeology #YukonGeologicalSurvey Image
We use the accumulation of Terrestrial Cosmogenic Nuclides from glacially transported boulders to date deglaciation. Good boulder selection is crucial. These large boulders are from the CIS, most of these are saw worthy! #SFUglacialgeology #YukonGeologicalSurvey Image
