The recent outbreaks of #Zika Virus in #Kerala has renewed interest in this virus. This tweetorial explains some key aspects about the virus and why we should be actively using #genomics for #GeneticEpidemiology Image
The disease in most people is mild. Majority of people infected with Zika virus DO NOT develop symptoms. Symptoms are generally mild including fever, rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache, and usually last for 2–7 days.

Death is RARE
Infection during pregnancy can cause microcephaly & congential malformations.
Neurological complications like Guillain-Barré syndrome, neuropathy and myelitis are seen in some.

1. A quarter of the world’s total #SARS-Cov2 virus genomes have been sequenced on @nanopore devices. First sketched out as an idea here by David Deamer in 1989 this series of tweets covers the long history of nanopore sequencing.
2. Taking 25 years to fully materialise the development of nanopore sequencing has involved close collaboration between academia and industry and many actors from different disciplines and backgrounds. Each has their own story to tell.

3. Another early pioneer of @nanopore sequencing was #HaganBayley, a British chemist who in the 1990s began working on stochastic sensing as tool to detect metal ions to track submarines as they move through water and for other applications.

Congratulations, Agnieszka @BartenschlagLab! We actually began working on this during the last pandemic threat (#Zikavirus) and the way through editor and reviewer offices was not exactly aided by the current pandemic. But now it’s finally out! jvi.asm.org/content/early/…
Through TLR3, ZIKV induces proinflammatory #cytokines (IL-6, IL-10), which trigger STAT3 signaling, which in turn dampen #interferon responses. As #RIGI and #MDA5 sense ZIKV and induce IFN production, this antagonism eventually aids viral replication as we can show.
This is all so weirdly complex– a lot of work ahead to understand the details of innate immune regulation in virus infection. Ha, saying that– if you made it all the way to here in this thread, consider contributing to this special issue on exactly this topic ⬇️

Image
