I stand by this with no apology whatsoever. I realise some disagree vehemently. I respect their right to disagree but I strongly disagree with them too; not only as my right but also because I know that the majority of Zimbabweans supported & support the land reform programme!
In life one must stand for something. For me the land reform
programme is a bottom line. It was a necessary fulfillment of a key goal of Independence. But it was wrong to do it in a violent jambanja way; that's why we initiated the media outreach programme with clear messages!

1. Oliver Mtukudzi: A career that stretched over 40 years, with an incredible 67 albums. A real Zimbabwean hero, who carried our flag around the continent and beyond!
2. The Marxist Brothers: From Msengezi, near Chegutu, raised by a bricklayer father, and growing into one of the most influential acts of the past 40 years. Simon and Naison Chimbetu!

1. The rural calendar did not have much to look forward to but two items stood out. One was Christmas Day and the other was Independence Day. I was only 5 at the first independence but I have a few glorious memories of those early celebrations. Happy 40th, my nation #ZimAt40
2. In our area, all villagers gathered pachikomo paHwara, a central location where independence celebrations were held. It was quite some festival, full of singing, dancing, eating and drinking. A speech from Harare would be read by the local politician.
3. Villagers would spent months preparing for the day. They would contribute money to buy beasts, other food & drinks. Everyone had their share. It was a great occasion to meet and mix. There were occasional conflicts, even fisticuffs as chaps clashed over romantic interests.

The economy did boom in the first five years, thanks to the removal of sanctions and the creative use of the old marketing boards that now moved into the communal lands.

But there were a number of very severe stresses and problems that were not addressed.
First Zimbabwe had inherited Ian Smith’s tightly controlled economy with every dollar of export earnings assigned to an import by central authority.

Although it had high levels of private ownership, this was largely crony capitalism, you had to be white before 1980 and connected afterwards.
